The Michigan Supreme Court is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Human Resources Generalist. Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, this position serves as the primary contact and resource for judiciary employees, managers, judges, and justices to address human resource questions and concerns. Provides a full range of centralized, comprehensive human resource management services related to employment including, but not limited to: Hiring and retention, onboarding, benefits, performance management, payroll processing, records management, employee and employer relations, and training for the Michigan Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and State Court Administrative Office. This includes day-to-day contact with benefits administrators, managers, employees, and the public. Essential duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as a payroll and employment resource to justices, judges, managers, and Court staff; answer questions and serve as a liaison between the judiciary and HR-related administrators.
- Assist with employment processes, including the hiring and selection process, developing and conducting new employee orientation, counseling employees on benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment with the Court, responding to employee questions related to federal and state employment law, assisting with payroll issues, and providing pertinent information at the time of separation/retirement.
- Provide coaching and guidance to employees and managers regarding disciplinary issues and recommend appropriate documentation and follow-up.
- Coordinate ergonomic assessments and order equipment as specified.
- Attend HR related training sessions when needed.
- Implement and manage the performance communication process.
- Monitor and assist with leaves of absence by informing employees about options for court-provided family medical leave, long-term disability, leave use and other payroll issues affected by extended leave.
- Meet communication needs by maintaining human resources information on various internal or external Court sites, prepare and send HR-related e-mail notifications, prepare and deliver presentations regarding human resources policies and practices, and provide employee and/or manager informational sessions. Assist staff in the use of HR-related software and systems.
- Create and generate reports and provide analysis when necessary.
- Oversee the records retention process and confidentially maintain employment records as required by law.
- Process employee payroll hours and monitor timekeeping function. Perform daily payroll processing and bi-weekly certification, audit, and release of payroll through the state system. Maintain employee pay schedules and communicate with managers regarding pay increases and performance evaluations for staff. Perform calculations for payroll processing, including longevity, cost of living increases, and other salary-related events as approved by the Court.
- Assist with employee benefits programs and work with state benefit administrators on more unusual or complex issues. Assist staff with questions regarding annual insurance open enrollment.
- Maintains human resource information system records and compiles reports from the database.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in human resources management, business or public administration.
EXPERIENCE: Seven or more years of experience with responsibility for personnel and benefits administration and working knowledge of employment law. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with executive level staff to identify process improvements is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE:
- State and Federal employment laws and regulations such as ADA, FLSA, FMLA, Title VII, Elliot-Larsen, Bullard Plawecki, etc.
- Performance management and communication systems.
- Compensation and classification administration.

- Communicate effectively with varied audiences.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external constituents.
- Present to or train varied audiences.
- Prioritize and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Operate in a fast-paced environment where priorities may be affected by outside influences such as legislative or regulatory changes.
WORK LOCATION: Official work-site location is the Hall of Justice. Remote work may be available in accordance with the MSC/SCAO Remote Work Policy. The candidate selected for the position must reside in Michigan on or before their first day of employment.
