Southern Kentucky Vascular (SKV) is seeking a motivated Nurse Practitioner (APRN) to join our growing vascular practice with a primary focus on the evaluation and treatment of venous disease.
This is a unique opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner who enjoys procedures and wants to develop a highly specialized skill set in the treatment of venous insufficiency and varicose vein disease.
Previous vein experience is not required. The successful candidate will receive extensive, hands-on training directly from Dr. Don Brown and the Southern Kentucky Vascular team, with the goal of developing the skills and confidence necessary to independently evaluate and treat appropriate venous patients.
The APRN will work alongside an established dedicated vein team, including experienced clinical staff and vascular ultrasound personnel. This is not a position where the provider will be expected to build or manage a vein program alone. The infrastructure, clinical support, ultrasound capabilities, and physician oversight are already in place.
The position will be primarily based in Somerset and London, Kentucky, with some travel to other Southern Kentucky Vascular locations as the practice continues to expand.
Position Overview
The Nurse Practitioner will become an integral member of SKV’s venous program. Following a structured training and competency period, the APRN will evaluate patients with venous disease and perform appropriate minimally invasive venous procedures within the scope permitted by Kentucky law, payer requirements, facility policies, and SKV clinical protocols.
Initially, the position will involve significant physician supervision, procedural observation, hands-on training, and education in venous ultrasound, patient selection, treatment planning, and complication management.
As competency is demonstrated, the APRN will progress toward greater procedural independence and ultimately manage a significant venous patient and procedural schedule while continuing to collaborate closely with SKV’s vascular surgeons.
Our goal is to develop a provider who becomes an expert in outpatient venous care and an important long-term member of the Southern Kentucky Vascular team.
Clinical Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include:
- Evaluate patients with symptomatic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and other appropriate superficial venous disorders.
- Obtain appropriate histories and physical examinations and develop evidence-based treatment plans.
- Review and interpret venous duplex ultrasound findings in conjunction with the vascular team.
- Determine appropriate conservative and procedural treatment options according to SKV protocols.
- Perform minimally invasive venous procedures after completion of appropriate training, credentialing, and demonstration of competency.
- Procedures may include endovenous thermal ablation, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, treatment using commercially available venous closure technologies, and other appropriate superficial venous interventions within the APRN's authorized scope of practice.
- Develop proficiency in ultrasound-guided access and other procedural skills necessary for venous interventions.
- Perform pre-procedure evaluations and post-procedure follow-up.
- Recognize potential complications and appropriately manage or escalate care when necessary.
- Provide patient education regarding venous disease, compression therapy, treatment options, procedural expectations, and post-procedure care.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Participate in quality improvement and clinical protocol development for the SKV venous program.
- Work collaboratively with vascular surgeons, advanced practice providers, vascular ultrasound technologists, nurses, medical assistants, and administrative staff.
Training & Professional Development
Previous experience performing vein procedures is not required.
Southern Kentucky Vascular will provide a structured training program that includes:
- Direct physician supervision and mentorship
- Venous anatomy and pathophysiology
- Venous duplex ultrasound interpretation
- Patient selection and treatment planning
- Ultrasound-guided procedural techniques
- Endovenous ablation techniques
- Sclerotherapy techniques
- Pre- and post-procedure management
- Recognition and management of complications
- Documentation, coding, and clinical workflow
- Progressive hands-on procedural experience
The PA will initially work closely with Dr. Don Brown and the SKV vein team, progressing toward greater procedural independence as competency is demonstrated.
For the right individual, this position provides an opportunity to develop a level of procedural expertise that is uncommon in traditional Physician Assistant positions.
Dedicated Vein Team
One of the major advantages of this position is the support structure surrounding the provider.
The APRN will work with an experienced SKV vein team designed to allow the provider to focus on patient care and procedures. This includes vascular ultrasound capabilities, experienced clinical staff, scheduling and authorization support, and access to vascular surgeons when physician input is needed.
We believe the best procedural outcomes occur when providers work within an experienced, coordinated team rather than in isolation.
Practice Locations & Travel
The primary practice locations will be:
Somerset, Kentucky
London, Kentucky
Some travel to additional Southern Kentucky Vascular locations will be expected based upon patient demand and expansion of the venous program.
Travel will be planned in advance whenever possible, and appropriate reimbursement will be provided for required travel between SKV locations.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited APRN program.
- Current or eligible Kentucky Nurse Practitioner Licensure
- Current BLS certification; ACLS preferred.
- Strong interest in procedural medicine and vascular disease.
- Excellent technical and hand-eye skills.
- Comfortable working with ultrasound-guided procedures or motivated to develop these skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent communication and patient-care skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
- Willingness to travel between SKV locations.
Previous experience in vascular surgery, interventional radiology, cardiology, surgery, emergency medicine, orthopedics, or another procedure-oriented specialty is beneficial but not required.
More important than previous vein experience is finding an individual with the aptitude, work ethic, personality, and desire to become an excellent procedural provider.

Compensation & Benefits
Southern Kentucky Vascular recognizes that this is a specialized procedural position with responsibilities and revenue-generating potential beyond those of a traditional clinic-based Physician Assistant role.
Accordingly, the compensation structure is designed to reward both clinical excellence and procedural productivity.
Compensation
- Base salary: $130,000–$150,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Procedural productivity incentive following completion of training and demonstration of competency.
- Expected total compensation for an established and productive provider of approximately $175,000–$200,000+ annually, depending on procedural volume and productivity.
- Opportunity for compensation to continue growing as the provider develops greater procedural expertise and assumes responsibility for a larger venous patient population.
The initial phase of employment will focus heavily on training and professional development. As the APRN becomes proficient and begins independently managing a larger procedural schedule, the compensation model will provide meaningful financial upside for that additional productivity.
