SPED Paraprofessional
Assists classroom teachers in all activities including instruction, personal care of students, and preparation of lesson materials and evaluation of student’s progress. Responsible for working with students in the co-taught instructional model within the general education classroom to provide academic support.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Associate’s degree or successful completion of state-approved Paraprofessional Assessment.

Up to one-year related experience preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Board of Education.
-
Previous Paraprofessional experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-
Assist students with reading, math, computer, and other assignments.
-
Grade work of students, record grades, and assist them with understanding when they are incorrect.
-
Assist students during seatwork and offer feedback.
-
Monitor students during class transitions.
-
Escort and remain with students during connection classes.
-
Assist lead teacher with classroom management and redirection of students.
-
Assist students with physical needs (e.g., using the restroom).
-
Assist with domestic living/self-care skills; toileting, bathing, feeding, washing soiled clothes, and changing students who are not toilet trained.

Assist with physically disabled students (lifting and transferring from one location to another).
-
Assist with loading and unloading students on buses, including wheelchairs.
-
Assist with medically fragile students (tube feeding, catheterization, etc.).
-
Assist students with daily practice of physical/occupational therapists’ prescriptions.
-
Assist students with augmentative/alternative communication (electronic devices, signing, etc.).
-
Assist with documenting student data at community-based instruction and vocational training sites.
-
Carries out the student’s behavior modification plan.
-
Aids students with simple errands like sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, etc.
-
Reinforces material initially introduced by the teacher.
-
Assist students with handicapping conditions on field trips.
-
Accompany students to the office or other areas in the school as necessary.
-
Assists with community-based instruction and Special Olympics activities.
-
Serves as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team upon request.
-
Maintains confidentiality about students and the educational program.
-
Prepares instructional materials for students, i.e., copying notes, enlarging necessary materials, copying homework assignments, etc.

Performs any other clerical and supportive services as requested by the teacher or administrators.

Assists in giving informal assessments and checking progress.
-
Assists in small group instruction; tutors’ students at the teacher’s request.
-
Assists in providing accommodation and/or modification as specified in the student’s IEP.
-
Participate in staff meetings, professional learning, serve on staff committees, and attend training sessions as required.

Follow federal laws, state laws, and School Board policies.
-
Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists with supervision of designated students with disabling conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s degree preferred or passing score on the GACE Paraprofessional assessment

State/FBI Criminal History Clearance
-
Ability to work well with teachers, school administrative teams, and district office leaders.

Exceptional integrity, commitment to confidentiality, excellent character, and strong professional reputation.

Ability to abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.

Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.

Ability to be present at the physical worksite.

Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.

Must perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.

Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
