Duties
- Manage daily herding activities to guide sheep safely through pastures, pens, and grazing areas using herding techniques and equipment.
- Monitor sheep health and behavior, identifying signs of illness or distress and coordinating veterinary care when necessary.
- Operate farm machinery such as tractors, forklifts, and other heavy equipment to assist with moving livestock or farm materials.
- Maintain fencing, gates, and infrastructure to ensure secure enclosures and prevent escapes or predators.
- Perform routine equipment repairs including welding, using hand tools and power tools to keep all herding and farm machinery in optimal condition.
- Assist with animal husbandry tasks like feeding, watering, shearing, and caring for newborn lambs or other livestock.
- Support irrigation systems and horticultural activities on the farm to promote healthy pasture growth and sustainable farming practices.
Requirements
- Proven supervising experience in livestock management or farm operations.
- Mechanical knowledge with hands-on experience operating farm machinery, heavy equipment, and power tools.
- Strong animal husbandry skills with a focus on sheep care and handling techniques.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and operate forklifts or similar equipment confidently.
- Knowledge of farming practices including irrigation systems, greenhouse work, horticulture, and growing experience.
- Basic math skills for record keeping, inventory management, and measuring feed or medication dosages.
- Excellent animal handling abilities with patience and attentiveness to animal behavior.
- Welding skills or experience with equipment repair is a plus.
- Equine experience or familiarity with other farm animals is desirable but not required.
