Job Summary
The Customer Assistant (Evenings & Weekends) is the helpful face of our storefront during our peak community shopping hours and a vital resource for our wellness-conscious shoppers. This specialized role focuses on providing a friendly, inclusive experience while actively connecting with customers who care about nutrition, organic living, and sustainability. A successful candidate will maintain excellent store standards during busy evening and weekend blocks, accurately process transactions, and efficiently execute nightly recovery and closing duties to prepare the store for the next morning.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Wellness-Focused Service: Greet customers warmly as they shop, answer questions about product locations, and share basic information about store standards (e.g., organic, non-GMO, local, fair-trade).
- Nightly Floor Recovery & Merchandising: Stock, front, and face merchandise across grocery, dairy, frozen, bulk, and wellness aisles efficiently; actively assist customers on the floor and at refill stations, ensuring shelves stay filled and beautifully presented through the end of the day.
- Store Closing & Sanitation: Execute mandatory nightly closing checklists, including sweeping and mopping shopping aisles, emptying trash, and ensuring all refrigeration, display cases, restrooms, and back rooms are sanitized, clean, and secure before lockup.
- Facility Security & Lock-Up: Partner with the Evening Lead to fully secure the building at the end of the shift; verify all perimeter exit doors are locked, ensure secondary gates or loading zones are clear and locked, check that backroom equipment and lights are safely turned off, and assist with arming the security system.
- Transaction Processing: Scan items efficiently, weigh bulk goods accurately, and process cash, credit, debit, gift cards, and electronic benefits (EBT/SNAP). To ensure accuracy, count change back to customers.
- Inventory Accuracy: Consistently scan each item individually to ensure accurate transactions and maintenance of inventory count.
- Bulk & Produce Identification: Learn, differentiate, and memorize PLU codes for a vast selection of organic produce, heirloom varieties, and specialty items.
- Bagging & Sustainability: Pack groceries carefully using reusable, paper, or compostable bags, respecting customer preferences for zero-waste packaging.
- Nightly Cash Management: Count, balance, and reconcile the closing cash drawer at the end of every evening shift, maintaining strict accuracy and following secure drop procedures.
- Lane Maintenance: Keep the checkout area clean, inviting, organized, and sanitized using store-approved cleaning products.
- Product Freshness & Rotation: Monitor product expiration dates closely during evening restocking, practicing the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method.
- Store Support: Help restock grab-and-go coolers, front merchandise on shelves, and maintain the neatness of nearby supplement or bulk-buy aisles during slow hours.
Qualifications & Skills
- Availability Requirement: Must have open availability to work late afternoons, evenings, and full weekend shifts (Saturdays and Sundays).
- Passion for Wellness: A genuine interest in health, nutrition, organic foods, dietary lifestyles (e.g., vegan, gluten-free, keto), or holistic wellness is highly preferred.
- Education & Experience: Although no formal education is required; prior retail, customer service, grocery, or closing-shift experience is a plus. Lead Position Requires 2 years retail experience and 1 year supervisor or team lead experience.
- Product Knowledge: Willingness to continuously learn about health trends, supplements, and unique grocery ingredients to better assist shoppers on the floor.
- Reliability & Autonomy: Strong personal accountability and time-management skills to complete nightly cleaning and recovery tasks efficiently and accurately before clocking-out.
- Communication Skills: Empathetic listening and clear communication skills to guide customers through specialized or allergen-sensitive inquiries.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk comfortably around the store floor for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours).
- Ability to repeatedly lift, bend, push, pull, reach, and carry items weighing up to 25–30 lbs (such as heavy bulk sacks, beverage crates, trash bags, or cardboard).
- Constant manual dexterity for unboxing products, stocking shelves, and handling delicate merchandise.
