Duties
- Safely operate school vans and paratransit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, vehicle codes, and school policies.
- Transport students to and from school, extracurricular activities, and special events promptly and responsibly.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety, mechanical integrity, and compliance with all safety regulations.
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies using defensive driving techniques and emergency response procedures for transportation.
- Maintain clear communication with school staff, parents, and students to coordinate schedules and address any concerns.
- Assist children with boarding and disembarking, ensuring their safety during transit while managing behavior effectively.
- Follow emergency stop procedures, CPR protocols, first aid guidelines, and child care standards when necessary.
- Keep detailed logs of trips, incidents, vehicle maintenance needs, and adherence to route schedules.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills by creating a welcoming environment for students of diverse backgrounds.
- Handle heavy lifting when loading or unloading equipment or supplies related to school activities.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in bus driving or commercial driving with a valid driver’s license appropriate for school bus or van operation.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, defensive driving techniques, and emergency response procedures for transportation.
- Bilingual proficiency in English plus Spanish preferred; excellent communication skills required.
- Valid CPR certification and first aid training; ability to respond swiftly during emergencies.
- Familiarity with school bus driving policies, behavior management strategies, and child care best practices.
- Mechanical knowledge of vehicle systems for basic troubleshooting and maintenance awareness.
- Ability to lift heavy objects safely; physically capable of working long shifts involving frequent stops.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with children, parents, school staff, and community members.
- Commitment to safety protocols including emergency stop procedures and quick responses to traffic changes.
- Drivers must maintain a safe and responsible driving record throughout their employment. A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review will be conducted prior to employment and may be conducted periodically thereafter.
- Individuals with a history of excessive moving violations, reckless driving, traffic offenses, license suspensions or revocations, or other driving-related convictions that may compromise the safe operation of a school vehicle or the school's insurance eligibility may be disqualified from operating school vehicles.
All school vehicle drivers must successfully complete and maintain a Level 2 Background Screening in accordance with applicable Florida law and school policy before transporting students. Employment and authorization to operate a school vehicle are contingent upon meeting all background screening requirements.
