About the Role
We are seeking an experienced MEP Engineer with a strong background in rail transit infrastructure to support design, construction, inspection, and commissioning for heavy rail, commuter rail, and transit facilities.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with MTA, Amtrak, NJ Transit, or similar transportation agencies and is able to apply engineering principles to ensure safe, reliable, and code-compliant Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing systems across stations, tunnels, maintenance facilities, and support buildings.
ResponsibilitiesMechanical Engineering Focus
- Lead HVAC, fire protection, and thermal systems design for stations, tunnels, and support facilities
- Prepare calculations, equipment specifications, and layout drawings per ASHRAE, NFPA, NYC & NYS codes
- Coordinate mechanical design with structural, electrical, and architectural teams
- Support field reviews, submittal evaluations, and commissioning
- Evaluate ventilation and smoke control systems for stations and tunnels
- Support constructability reviews and phased construction planning while maintaining active rail operations
Electrical Engineering Focus
- Design power distribution, lighting, communications, signaling support, and emergency power systems
- Prepare electrical load analyses, conduit/cable schedules, and panel layouts
- Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, local utilities, and MTA/Amtrak standards
- Interface with systems operations, CTS/SCADA teams
- Coordinate traction power, utility services, and emergency power systems
- Perform field inspections and testing oversight for electrical installations
Plumbing Engineering Focus
- Design plumbing, stormwater, and sanitary waste systems for stations and facilities
- Specify fixtures, pumps, backflow prevention, and drainage systems
- Coordinate with mechanical on water heating and mechanical room layouts
- Review contractor submittals and perform site visits
- Design sump pump, drainage, and flood mitigation systems for below-grade rail infrastructure
- Coordinate plumbing design with civil and structural teams for utility conflicts and long-term maintenance
Cross-Discipline Tasks
- Lead multidisciplinary coordination meetings with agencies (MTA, Amtrak), architects, and contractors
- Prepare technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates
- Review RFIs, change orders, and as-built documentation
- Assist with QA/QC monitoring for all MEP engineering work
QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering (or similar field)
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in rail transit/transportation projects
- Strong knowledge of MTA, Amtrak, NJ Transit, or similar agency standards
- Proficiency with industry design tools (AutoCAD, Revit, BIM 360, SKM, HAP, etc.)
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in NY, NJ, or nearby states
- Experience with Design-Bid-Build or Design-Build project delivery methods
- Experience in system commissioning and field investigations
- Knowledge of transit safety, reliability, maintainability, and accessibility codes
