Position Summary:
The Class A Driver / Laborer is responsible for safely operating commercial vehicles and supporting construction crews in the installation, maintenance, and restoration of underground and aerial utility infrastructure. This position requires transporting equipment, materials, and personnel to and from job sites while performing labor duties as needed to support project completion. The employee must maintain compliance with DOT regulations, company safety policies, and customer requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include the following (other duties may be assigned):
Driving Responsibilities
Operate Class A commercial vehicles, including trailers and equipment haulers.
Transport construction equipment, tools, materials, and supplies to project sites.
Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and daily vehicle inspections.
Secure loads in compliance with DOT and company requirements.
Maintain accurate driver logs, inspection reports, and vehicle documentation.
Report vehicle defects, accidents, or safety concerns immediately.
Ensure all required permits and registrations are current and available.
Labor Responsibilities
Assist crews with excavation, trenching, boring, conduit installation, handhole placement, and utility construction activities.
Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment.
Perform asphalt, concrete, and landscape restoration work.
Assist with pulling, placing, and blowing fiber optic cable.
Operate hand tools, power tools, and small construction equipment.
Perform traffic control duties when required.
Maintain a clean and organized job site.
Assist with locating underground utilities and potholing operations.
Perform general labor duties as assigned.
Safety Responsibilities
Follow all Cal/OSHA regulations, DOT requirements, and company safety policies.
Attend required safety meetings and tailgate training.
Wear required PPE at all times.
Immediately report injuries, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
Participate in vehicle and equipment safety inspections.
Skills and experience required
Must have a valid Class A driver's license.
Be at least 18 years of age.
High school diploma.
Ability to do physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
Ability to work in all weather.
Workers must be punctual and reliable.
Must have experience as a general laborer in the Telecommunications construction industry.
Required Qualifications
Valid California Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).
Current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check, if applicable.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
Ability to travel and work overtime, nights, weekends, or out-of-town assignments as required.
Ability to read and understand safety procedures and work instructions.
Completion of daily DVIR inspections
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; kneel; talk; or hear, and hand grip. The employee may frequently lift, pull or push and move more than 50 pounds. Frequently use a copier, scanner, phone, and computer equipment. The employee is occasionally required to sit or drive for long periods of time. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision which is clear vision at 20 inches or less, distance vision which is clear vision at 20 feet or more, color vision which is the ability to identify and distinguish colors, peripheral vision which is ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, and ability to adjust focus which includes the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus. Specific hearing levels within normal or average range. Any of these specific vision requirements can be met or enhanced with prescription glasses or contact lenses.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to cold or heat weather conditions; the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
