Essential Functions
Reporting to the Instructional Leader, the Physical Education Teacher at Haven Charter High School (HCHS) is responsible for designing and delivering engaging, student-centered physical education instruction that promotes lifelong health, fitness, and wellness. The teacher fosters a safe, inclusive environment that supports physical development, teamwork, and social-emotional growth.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Build strong, supportive relationships with adolescents

Maintain effective classroom and gym management while delivering high-quality instruction

Plan and implement engaging physical education lessons aligned to state standards and student needs

Promote physical fitness, health, and wellness through a variety of activities, including team sports, individual fitness, and lifelong recreational skills

Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs, abilities, and interests of all students
-
Create an organized, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment that encourages participation and respect

Ensure student safety by establishing clear expectations and supervising all physical activities appropriately

Integrate health education concepts, including nutrition, mental health, and personal wellness, into instruction

Assess student progress regularly and provide timely, actionable feedback on skill development and fitness goals

Use assessment data to inform instruction and support student growth Maintain accurate student records in accordance with applicable laws and policies

Support student behavior through restorative practices and consistent implementation of school policies

Collaborate with colleagues across content areas to support interdisciplinary connections, particularly within health sciences pathways

Engage in ongoing self-reflection to improve instructional practice

Participate in professional development aligned with school priorities and instructional best practices

Attend and contribute to department, school, and family meetings

Communicate regularly with students, families, and colleagues regarding student progress and wellness

Contribute to the broader school community, including extracurricular activities, athletics, student programs, and school-wide initiatives

Participate in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism professional learning opportunities

Required Clearance

Work Environment
This job operates in a school environment, including gymnasiums, outdoor spaces, and classrooms. This role routinely uses standard equipment related to physical education and fitness activities.
Physical Demands
This position requires active physical engagement with students and the ability to safely demonstrate, instruct, and participate in physical education activities. Physical demands include, but are not limited to, standing and moving for extended periods, running, bending, lifting equipment (up to approximately 25–50 lbs.), and participating in indoor and outdoor physical activities in varying weather conditions. The employee must be able to respond quickly to ensure student safety during physical activity and maintain constant visual supervision.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on HCHS needs.
QUALIFICATIONS

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

Facility with and willingness to learn education technologies;

Experience working with adolescents in grades 9-12, with two years of teaching experience preferred;

Bachelor’s degree with teaching experience; Master’s degree preferred

NYS 7-12 certified or in process preferred;
