Gold Mountain California News Media is looking for an energetic, community-minded journalist to help cover the people, businesses, schools, nonprofits and local governments that make our communities unique.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys meeting people, telling meaningful local stories and becoming a familiar face throughout the community. While the position will assist with coverage throughout our region, there will be a strong emphasis on Folsom.
Responsibilities
- Research, report and write engaging local news and feature stories.
- Cover city council, school board and community meetings as assigned.
- Develop relationships with local leaders, businesses, nonprofits, schools, law enforcement and residents.
- Generate original story ideas and enterprise reporting.
- Cover community events, festivals, fundraisers and business openings.
- Conduct interviews, gather accurate information and verify facts.
- Take high-quality photographs to accompany stories.
- Write headlines, captions and photo cutlines.
- Meet daily and weekly publication deadlines.
- Contribute content for print, websites, eNewsletters and social media.
- Collaborate with editors on story planning and special projects.
- Occasionally assist with breaking news coverage when needed.
Qualifications
- Strong writing, interviewing and communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines.
- Comfortable attending evening meetings and occasional weekend events.
- Photography skills are highly desirable.
- Experience with AP Style is preferred.
- Journalism degree or equivalent experience is preferred, but talented writers with community reporting experience are encouraged to apply.
- Reliable transportation and a valid California driver's license are required.

We're looking for someone who is naturally curious and enjoys getting out into the community. The successful candidate will be comfortable introducing themselves to new people, asking thoughtful questions and finding stories that matter to local readers.
This is more than covering meetings. It's about discovering the people, organizations and businesses that make our communities special and telling their stories with fairness, accuracy and integrity.
Position Details
- Part-time position
- Flexible schedule with evening meetings and occasional weekend assignments
- Primary coverage area: Folsom
- Additional coverage in Auburn, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln and Loomis
