The Callahan Library on the St. Joseph’s University Patchogue Campus seeks a part-time library assistant to work weeknights and Saturdays during the academic year. Successful candidates will possess excellent communication skills; adhere to scheduled hours by punctual, regular attendance; validate IDs for admission to the library and report issues to supervisors; perform routine circulation functions; receive and record payments related to overdue fines; answer phones and e-mails; locate and accurately shelve materials (Library of Congress Classification); monitor printer/copier paper; and other duties in keeping with an academic library. Essential to employment is maintaining strict confidentiality of user records. Specific responsibilities of the successful candidate will be refined by the Executive Director of Libraries, building on the match of employee strengths and interests with the needs of the library.
REQUIRED:
- Courteous, tactful demeanor when interacting with librarians, staff, faculty, and students
- Accurate adherence to library rules, policies, and procedures; ability to explain them professionally
- Proficiency troubleshooting hardware problems and/or reporting clearly to information technology staff
- Working knowledge of software, including MS Office applications
- Ability to locate, retrieve, move, and lift books; strength to push library cart with books and coordination to use stepstool for high shelves
- Some post-secondary education
- Work experience (post-high school) of at least five-years (library experience a plus)
HOURS:
- Monday -Thursday 4-8 pm
- Saturday (10-4) academic semesters only
- Additional hours may be possible depending on the needs of the library
- Maximum annual hours may not exceed 999 per calendar year
