Position Summary
The Animal Care Technician Supervisor is responsible for leading the daily operations of the Animal Care team while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, cleanliness and safety. This is a working supervisor position, meaning you will actively perform animal care duties alongside your team while providing leadership, coaching, accountability, and support.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who enjoys mentoring staff, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is passionate about improving the lives of shelter animals.
Essential Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise, coach, and develop Animal Care Technicians.
- Lead by example by working alongside staff in daily operations.
- Create daily assignments and ensure work is completed efficiently.
- Monitor employee performance and provide ongoing coaching and feedback.
- Assist with onboarding and training new employees.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable team culture.
- Address operational issues promptly and communicate effectively with management.
Animal Care
- Ensure all animals receive exceptional daily care, including feeding, watering, cleaning, enrichment, exercise, and monitoring.
- Observe animals for signs of illness, stress, or behavioral concerns and communicate findings to the appropriate departments.
- Maintain clean, safe, and sanitary kennels, cages, and common areas.
- Assist with animal handling, transfers, admissions, and adoptions as needed.
- Support disease prevention.
- Maintain accurate records and communicate important information between departments.
Operations
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, safety standards, and animal welfare best practices.
- Coordinate with medical, behavior, foster, and customer service teams to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Respond calmly and effectively during emergencies and changing shelter needs.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
- Minimum 1 year of professional experience working with animals in a shelter, veterinary clinic, boarding facility, daycare, or similar environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop employees.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent communication and conflict-resolution abilities.
- Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable making decisions independently while collaborating with leadership.
Preferred
- Animal shelter experience.
- Knowledge of animal behavior and welfare best practices.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work on your feet for extended periods.
- Ability to safely handle animals of various sizes and temperaments.
- Comfortable working in environments with cleaning chemicals, noise, and varying temperatures.
