Position Summary
The Powder Coat Painter is responsible for applying powder coating to metal substrates with accuracy, consistency, and proper technique. This role ensures correct mil thickness, high-quality finishes, and adherence to safety standards. Responsibilities include inspecting parts, preparing equipment, applying powder, addressing coating defects, and ensuring parts move efficiently through each stage of the powder coating process.
Authority
The Powder Coat Painter is authorized to:
- Recommend improvements to coating processes.
- Assist coworkers to improve quality and efficiency.
- Send back product that is damaged, improperly hung and/or improperly prepped.
- Report equipment issues to management.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Pre-Operation & Inspection
- Beginning of shift complete all pre-inspections and documentation.
- Inspect product prior to coating for damage or improper prep.
- Inspect spray guns, powder equipment, grounds, and air lines; report malfunctions immediately.
- Inspect the powder booth for contamination and clean as needed.
- Reject parts that do not meet prep/hang standards.
Powder Application
- Clean powder booths thoroughly during color changes.
- Clean powder guns, hoppers, and related equipment between colors.
- Ensure correct powder is used for each job, powder code on box to that on the rack tag.
- Always ensure proper rack and part grounding.
- Apply powder coating uniformly and ensure proper mil thickness to meet call out specification and/or Vendor recommendations.
- Understand Faraday effects, spray angles, and powder flow.
- Apply various types of powder coats and understand how each behaves on metal substrates and proper machine settings for the variety of powders.
- Understand proper machine settings for different metals/substrates and reshoots.
- Mask areas that should not receive coating.
- Understand proper curing times and temperatures for different powder materials.
Quality Control
- Identify coating defects, including:
- Fish eyes
- Blemishes
- Heavy coat
- Ionization (star burst)
- Orange peel
- Light spots
- Sags
- Communicate recurring issues to the Supervisor.
- Maintain low reshoot and rework rates.
Safety & Housekeeping
- Maintain a safe, clean work environment.
- Follow all safety protocols, including PPE requirements.
- Lift up to 55 pounds and safely maneuver racks and parts.
- Stay alert to potential safety hazards throughout the shop.

Qualifications
- Ability to read and write, including using data sheets.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the Shift Supervisor.
- Ability to assess metal issues and communicate discrepancies.
- Ability to think critically and solve problems.
- Ability to use tools related to powder application.
- Ability to train less experienced workers as needed.
- Ability to use measuring devices, including mil thickness gauges.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced powder coating production environment.
- Exposure to powder, airborne particulates, chemicals, heat from curing ovens, and moving equipment.
- Requires PPE such as gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, and hearing protection.
- Frequent standing, bending, pushing/pulling racks, and lifting up to 55 lbs.

- Must be able to work overtime or occasional weekends depending on production demand
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.00 - $27.00 per hour

Experience:
- Industrial painting: 2 years (Required)
- Dry Film Thickness Gauges: 1 year (Required)
- Wet Film Thickness Gauges: 1 year (Required)
