About Turnout
Turnout (turnout.co) is building America's modern consumer advocacy platform, helping everyday people navigate the systems that were never designed to be easy. At the center of the experience is Jake, our AI case orchestrator, who works alongside trained advocates to guide clients from start to finish. We turn overwhelming bureaucracy into clear, manageable steps that actually get results.
Our newest vertical is Education Advocacy — helping families navigate the special education system: IEPs, 504 plans, evaluations, school meetings, and disputes. It's one of the most emotionally charged, legally complex, and chronically underserved areas in American family life. We're building the best team in the country to serve these families.
About the Role
We are seeking an Education Advocate to represent families of children with disabilities in the special education process. You will be a trusted expert and guide helping parents understand their rights, prepare for and virtually attend IEP and 504 meetings, challenge school decisions, and secure the services their child is entitled to under IDEA and Section 504.
You will manage a caseload of families from initial intake through resolution, working closely with our operations team, Jake AI, and eventually other advocates as we grow the vertical.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary advocate for assigned families throughout their IEP, 504, or evaluation process
- Review existing IEPs, evaluations, and school records to identify gaps, errors, or legal deficiencies
- Prepare families for IEP team meetings, explain their rights, coach on what to ask, and attend meetings as their representative (virtually)
- Draft written correspondence to school districts — meeting requests, records requests, service concern letters, post-meeting summaries, and escalation letters — and support families through state complaint and OCR complaint processes
- Collaborate with our operations team to ensure documentation is organized, timelines are met, and cases are progressing
- Identify when independent educational evaluations (IEEs), mediation, or state complaints are appropriate and guide families through those processes
- Identify when cases exceed non-attorney advocacy scope and facilitate warm referrals to special education attorneys
- Document case activity and update client records in our CRM (Salesforce)
- Contribute to building out our education advocacy playbooks, scripts, and training materials as an early team member
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Deep knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and the IEP process
- Experience attending IEP meetings in a representative or advocacy capacity (school employee, parent advocate, or similar)
- Genuinely passionate about family empowerment, you believe parents deserve to understand the system, not just trust the school
- Emotionally grounded under pressure — this work involves families in crisis, and the best advocates hold steady when parents are frightened or frustrated
- Thrives in a fast-paced, tech-forward startup environment
- High tolerance for ambiguity; excited to help build something from scratch
- Strong written and verbal communication, you can translate legal language into plain English without condescension
- Comfortable learning new tools quickly (Salesforce, Jake AI, internal systems)
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in special education advocacy, case management, special education law, or a closely related field
- Familiarity with the IEP process from the advocacy or representative side (not just as a school employee executing decisions)
- Experience supporting families of children with autism, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disabilities, or other eligibility categories
- COPAA SEAT certification or equivalent preferred
- Background in special education law, social work, or education consulting a strong plus
