The purpose of this position is to manage the environmental health, hazardous materials, wastewater treatment, public facilities, vector control, housing, Smoke Free policy enforcement, and food hygiene inspection or emergency response programs.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
Manages operations and staff engaged in the legal enforcement of environmental regulations and ordinances, and responding to hazardous materials events, epidemics, floods, natural disasters, and other emergencies.
Provides guidance and interpretation of codes in enforcement cases involving multiple codes, renders decisions in complex cases or media sensitive cases, and monitors timeliness of enforcement cases and special projects.
Administers office hearings and meditates settlements when voluntary compliance with regulations has not been achieved.
Evaluates productivity data, establishes work load and program priorities, and anticipates and plans for seasonal staffing needs to assure allocation of resources and sharing of field staff is accomplished to meet demands.
Develops program objectives for annual budget and determines annual goals for program areas.
Assists in grant application, monitors program reports to ensure compliance with grant reporting regulations, provides technical assistance and information concerning regulation procedures or grant performance requirements.
Manages a field operation component during hazardous materials events, epidemics, floods, natural disasters, and other emergencies; and coordinates efforts with other participating agencies.
Develops work protocols and implements program changes or procedures to improve the efficiency of operations.
Plans and conducts community environmental needs assessments through surveys, focus groups, and public meetings to identify, address and resolve environmental health problems in communities.
Provides support to multiple locations, including non-Metro locations.
Performs related work as assigned.
