Job Overview
We are hiring an experienced Field Service Technician to support clients throughout Greater Boston.
When this equipment is down, important clinical and research work can be disrupted. We need a technician who can troubleshoot equipment—not simply replace parts. The right person will work independently at client sites, diagnose problems methodically, communicate professionally, and take each service call from arrival through documented closeout.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair sterilizers, autoclaves, laboratory washers, and related electro-mechanical equipment
You will work independently in the field, but you will not work outside the system. Strong technicians at Buxton are trusted because they communicate, follow through, and consistently produce good work.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, plumbing, steam, pneumatic, and control-system problems
- Perform preventive maintenance according to approved procedures and equipment requirements
- Use schematics, service history, test equipment, and measurements to identify root causes
- Test equipment and verify proper operation before returning it to service
- Complete clear, accurate, and timely service reports
- Document findings, repairs, parts used, test results, remaining risks, and recommended next steps
- Communicate clearly with client personnel, scheduling, technical support, and company leadership
- Identify parts needs, equipment risks, and potential delays before they become surprises
- Maintain an organized service vehicle, toolbox, test equipment, and commonly used parts
- Support other technicians and client territories when needed
Required Qualifications
- At least 3 years of field service, industrial maintenance, or electro-mechanical troubleshooting experience
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Experience working with motors, pumps, valves, relays, contactors, sensors, heating systems, controls, PLCs, or VFDs
- Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals
- Ability to safely use a multimeter and other diagnostic tools
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to organize your work, documentation, tools, and parts
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision
Preferred Experience
Experience with any of the following is especially valuable:
- Sterilizers or autoclaves
- Laboratory or commercial washers
- Medical or biomedical equipment
- Steam systems or boilers
- Pumps and plumbing systems
- HVAC or building controls
- Commercial appliances
- Industrial or pharmaceutical equipment
- Three-phase electrical systems
Technicians from Steris, Getinge, Belimed, Tuttnauer, Consolidated, BetterBuilt, Lancer, Miele, or similar service organizations may be a strong fit.
Experienced HVAC, boiler, pump, controls, biomedical, commercial appliance, and industrial maintenance technicians are also encouraged to apply if they have strong electro-mechanical troubleshooting skills.

Physical Requirements
This is active field service work. You must be able to:
- Regularly lift and carry a toolbox, test equipment, replacement parts, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Carry tools and parts through hospitals, laboratories, mechanical spaces, hallways, loading areas, and stairways
- Load and unload tools, parts, and equipment from a service vehicle
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work at floor level
- Access the sides and rear of large equipment and work in limited-access mechanical spaces
- Safely climb stairs and ladders
- Use hand tools and power tools for extended periods
- Work around heat, steam, hot surfaces, water, electricity, and moving mechanical equipment
- Move heavier components using appropriate assistance or lifting equipment

Territory and Travel
- Daily travel throughout Greater Boston and the surrounding region
- Occasional overnight or out-of-territory travel
- Occasional travel to Buxton’s New York facility for training and team collaboration
- Participation in after-hours or emergency coverage as assigned
Some client facilities conduct animal research. Technicians may encounter strong odors, controlled animal environments, or live laboratory animals.
Pay: $33.72 - $43.26 per hour
