Music Director Job Description
QUALIFICATIONS
The Music Director plays an important role in the spiritual climate of the church, both as a leader and as an example. This person will have a solid understanding of the foundations of the Christians faith, be a, or have knowledge of, United Methodism (or a willingness to learn), and who has a strong desire to foster a spirit of enthusiasm for the music which enhances our Christian faith. We seek a person who has the musical knowledge and ability to produce a high quality music program, generate new ideas and programs, and who values a team concept of ministry. Therefore, the following qualifications are desirable:
● Have the passion, ability and calling to work with people with varying levels of talent and ability, to help them bring out their best during the worship service.
● Preferably have an educational background and/or past experience working in the field of music.
● Good organizational and interpersonal skills
TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES
● Supervision of the Sunday morning musicians and singers. Working closely with them in producing the music for worship.
● Rehearse the choir for their active participation and leadership role in the scheduled Sunday worship services and other services as required.
● Select all choral anthems to be sung by the choir. Music should be appropriate for use in the worship service. Sunday morning hymns/songs selection shall be made by the Pastor, and given to the organist or piano accompanist in advance of their rehearsal and performance by the choir.
● Conduct the choir presentation at the weekly worship service.
● Be responsible for the choir’s and/or musicians appearance, sound and delivery.
● Conduct weekly rehearsals and hold additional rehearsals as identified by special needs.
● Include celebration performances with special choir selections or programs of music from time to time for the promotion of choral worship and the general spiritual health of the congregation. Organize special programs such as the Christmas and Easter Cantatas when appropriate. The Music Director will make arrangements for special soloists, accompanists, or instrumentalists, especially when the choir is not singing.
● Maintain a good rapport with the Pastor, Organist/Pianist and members of the choir.
● Purchase music and music supplies for the choir program. All expenditures shall be under the budgetary control of the Worship Team.
● Give advice and assistance whenever requested by the Pastor.
● Be an ex-officio member of the Worship Team.
● Attend appropriate workshops or seminars that enhance the effectiveness, knowledge or spirit of the choir’s performance.
● May elect to prepare the choir for any performances that may take place outside of the Christ Church facility. Opportunities for community outreach and evangelism are encouraged by the Christ Church.
HOURS
The Music Director requires flexibility in hours available for work, including evenings and weekends. The position is a part time, salaried position. The actual number of hours required during any given week are those which are needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. It is recognized that the schedule may vary at different times of the year. It is therefore understood that the Music Director shall:
● Keep the church office and Pastor informed as to how he/she can be contacted (address, telephone, cell phone, e-mail).
● Notify the Pastor prior to any unforeseen absence from a Sunday morning service or other regularly scheduled rehearsal, performance or meeting.
● Provide a substitute director for any planned absence from a rehearsal or performance. Inform the Church Treasurer of your period of absence and that period of remuneration will be deducted from your next paycheck if not an allowable vacation day. The substitute will be paid a comparable amount or an amount approved by Staff, Pastor, Parish Relations Committee (SPPRC).

BENEFITS
Remuneration and salary will be in accordance with the salary schedule for the church Music Director. Social Security will be paid by the church. The Music Director may be allowed up to three days (Sundays) vacation per year. This time must be arranged at least two weeks ahead of time with the pastor. Vacation time may not be taken during Advent/Christmas and late lent/Easter seasons.
SUPERVISION
Immediate supervision is provided by the Pastor. Should problems arise, and after discussion of them with the Pastor, the Music Director is free to contact the SPPRC liaison. The liaison is the point person for the SPPRC. Review performance on an annual basis with input from the Pastor and Worship Team. This will be conducted by the Pastor and the SPPRC Liaison to the Music Director.

Organist/Pianist Job Description

The Organist/Pianist plays an important role in the spiritual climate of the church, both as a leader and as an example. This person will have a solid understanding of the foundations of the Christian faith, be a, or have knowledge of United Methodism (or a willingness to learn), and who has a strong desire to foster a spirit of enthusiasm for the music which enhances our Christian faith. We seek a person who has the musical knowledge and ability to produce a high quality of music through the organ, and who values a team concept of ministry. Therefore, the following qualifications are desirable:
● Have the passion, ability and calling to work with people with varying levels of talent and ability, to help them bring out their best during the worship service.
● Should be an accomplished organist/pianist with the demonstrated level of skill that is strong enough to support the various musical needs of the church. Preferably have experience working as an organ accompanist in a church or other large group setting.
● Good organizational and interpersonal skills.
TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES
● Provide organ/piano music in accordance with the various needs of the congregation, including accompaniment to the Choir, accompaniment to vocal or instrumental soloists, hymn accompaniment to the congregation, organ solo pieces, and other special music as needed each Sunday.
● Play for extra services as needed, such as Christmas Eve and Lenten services.
● Maintain a good rapport with the Pastor, Music Director and members of the choir.
● Prepare in advance for rehearsals so that the music selections can be performed to the Music Director and Pastor’s satisfaction.
● Rehearse with and accompany musicians who are providing special music performances, such as children’s singing programs, soloists, etc.
● Play organ/piano for funerals and weddings at the church when needed.
● Be an ex-officio member of the Worship Team.
● Discuss with the Pastor the budgetary needs to maintain the organ/pianos. Schedule any maintenance needed for the organ/pianos, i.e. tuning of instruments, etc.
