As a Respiratory Therapist for Hilo Benioff Medical Center, you will play a critical role in delivering advanced respiratory care to a diverse patient population, including critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal patients. This position offers the opportunity to work independently while collaborating closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams in a dynamic hospital setting. Key Responsibilities

Independently assess, treat, and manage patients with respiratory disorders, including administering therapies and interpreting diagnostic results

Initiate, monitor, and manage life support systems such as mechanical ventilation, including ventilator adjustments and airway management

Respond to emergencies as part of the resuscitation team, including performing CPR, intubation support, and patient stabilization

Conduct pulmonary function testing, pulse oximetry monitoring, and assist with sleep studies and other specialized diagnostics

Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, treatments, and home care techniques

Ensure compliance with infection control, safety standards, and regulatory requirements while maintaining accurate documentation
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from a CoARC or CAAHEP-accredited program; or equivalent combination of education and experience, OR
-
Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy from a CoARC or CAAHEP-accredited program and 2 years of additional professional experience may be accepted with additional experience or required credentials, OR
-
Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy from a CoARC or CAAHEP-accredited program and Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) certification may substitute for the bachelor's degree requirement

Respiratory therapy experience under medical supervision:

Respiratory Therapist I: 0 years required

Respiratory Therapist II: ½ year required

Respiratory Therapist III: 1 year required

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential may substitute for 2 years of respiratory therapy experience.
Licensure & Certifications

Valid State of Hawaiʻi Respiratory Therapist license at time of hire

Current Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the NBRC

Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 6 months of hire

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 6 months and maintained thereafter

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
Must be available to work shifts, weekends and holidays as necessary based on hospital operations. Services are provided 24/7.
Compensation for this position includes a shortage differential.
