Program Manager, UCL (Remote — Membership Retention & Community)
The Uncommon Business
Remote · Full-time (W2)
Pay: $100,000 – $120,000 per year (base, based on experience) + performance bonus
Job Type: Full-time
Shift and Schedule: Monday to Friday. Extended hours and occasional weekend availability during launch seasons and product releases (see Schedule below).
About the Role
The Uncommon Business is hiring a full-time, remote Program Manager to own member retention and engagement for UCL, a membership business on track to reach $4–$5M per month by 2027. This is the first dedicated owner of the post-purchase member experience, responsible for keeping a sophisticated, AI-forward membership base engaged, progressing, and renewing.
Today, members stay largely because of personal access to the founders, which does not scale. This role builds the retention engine that replaces founder proximity with strong community, visible progress, and the right content reaching the right member at the right time. It is a senior individual-contributor role for someone who can build community and drive outcomes without a fixed playbook.
Reports to: Director of Student Engagement
Responsibilities
- Own the segmentation and communication strategy that keeps members engaged as the community scales.
- Own the AI Architect certification milestone system, ensuring every member is provably progressing toward a visible next step.
- Build and sustain a member community with strong retention and advocacy.
- Match content and curriculum delivery to each member's progress level and engagement signals, in partnership with the curriculum team.
- Encourage and help manage local pop-up events alongside the events team.
- Partner with build and ops teams to turn engagement data into an actionable member view.
Qualifications
- Prior experience at a Program Manager or Community Manager level (this is not an entry-level role).
- Experience owning member engagement or retention for a subscription or membership community, ideally with a track record against a churn target.
- Personally AI-fluent and credible with a technical, AI-forward member base.
- Genuine community-building instinct beyond a communications cadence.
- Comfortable operating without a fixed playbook or repeating cohort structure.
- Data-driven, able to act on engagement signals without waiting for a finished dashboard.
What Success Looks Like
- Churn: Hold churn under 5% on a rolling six-month basis.
- Certification Engagement: Get every member actively and provably working toward a visible next milestone.
- Member Understanding: Build a clear engagement and segmentation approach within your first 90 days.
- Content Match: Consistently match content and curriculum delivery to each member's progress level.
Schedule Expectations
This role requires flexibility and availability for additional hours and occasional weekend work during launch seasons, product releases, and critical business periods. We operate in high-intensity "championship season" cycles twice per year, when the full team rallies to deliver results.
Outside of those periods, the workload is sustainable and focused on building the systems that strengthen the next surge.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary of $100,000 – $120,000 per year, based on experience
- Performance bonus tied to the under-5% churn target
- Direct, full-time W2 hire
- $1,500 – $3,000 annual professional development budget for courses and certifications
- Full remote equipment setup (MacBook, monitor, desk equipment)
- Coworking membership allowance or home office setup budget
- Unlimited PTO
- Companywide closure December 25 through January 1
Applications are initially reviewed using AI-assisted screening tools to assess alignment with role requirements. All hiring decisions are made by humans.
