Summary of Position:
The Paint Operations Manager is a working leader responsible for supervising Paint Department personnel while supporting daily production activities. This position serves as the department's technical expert, providing training and guidance in surface preparation, masking, inspection, wet paint, and powder coating operations while ensuring quality, safety, and customer requirements are met. The Paint Operations Manager is expected to perform departmental functions as needed while leading and developing department personnel.
Job Duties:
- Develop, train, coach, and support Paint Department personnel.
- Perform hands-on paint department functions as required.
- Train employees in surface preparation, masking, demasking, inspection, wet paint application, powder coating, and related finishing processes.
- Ensure parts are processed to customer specifications, work instructions, procedures, and quality requirements.
- Review and manage daily production requirements and department workflow.
- Troubleshoot paint application, coating, equipment, and process-related issues.
- Ensure all required documentation and certifications are properly completed.
- Support department Key Indicators – Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
- Maintain compliance with customer specifications, internal procedures, OSHA requirements, EPA regulations, and safety standards.
- Maintain paint equipment, spray booths, and department work areas.
- Assist with interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, performance reviews, and employee development.
- Work with Engineering, Quality, Operations, and Production personnel to support customer and production requirements.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
- Support overtime and production demands as required.
Position Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 7 years of industrial painting experience.
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory, leadership, or department lead experience in a paint or finishing environment.
- Extensive experience with wet paint and powder coating applications.
- Experience in aerospace, military, medical, commercial, or other high-specification coating environments.
- Thorough knowledge of paint preparation and finishing processes, including masking, sanding, inspection, and bodywork principles.
- Ability to train and develop employees in all Paint Department functions.
- Working knowledge of paint inspection processes and quality standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, procedures, and work instructions.
- Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and manufacturing safety requirements.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
- Team player with a positive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications:
- NADCAP experience.
- Aerospace and defense industry experience.
- Experience implementing employee training programs.
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
Physical Demands:
- Upright mobility.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, twist, reach, and walk throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. regularly and up to 50 lbs. as needed.
- Ability to perform paint application, inspection, and production-related activities during the work shift.
Safety:
- Protective eyewear must be worn when operating machinery.
- Must follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and EPA regulations.
