The Full-Time Mechanic reports to the Building and Fleet Crew Lead and the Highway Superintendent. This position is responsible for efficiently and effectively inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing municipal fleet vehicles, equipment, and tools. The regular work schedule consists of four 10-hour days, generally from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Workdays may fluctuate based on a rotating schedule. Weekend, holiday, emergency, and overtime work may be required.
Job Duties
Mechanic – Level l $28.52/hr. - $31.36hr. PW-M1

Accurately document daily work, maintenance activities, and vehicle information using asset management software.

Ability to work effectively with co-workers and independently with limited supervision.

Change tires and sharpen or replace mower and snowblower blades.

Perform preventive maintenance and oil changes on light duty trucks and small engines.

Perform basic repairs to 12-volt electrical systems, including installing strobe lights and replacing light bulbs, plugs, hydraulic hoses, and related components.

Replace brake pads on light duty vehicles.
-
Follow all applicable safety precautions, policies, and procedures while completing assigned tasks.
Mechanic – Level II $32.93/hr. - $34.94/hr. PW-M2
In addition to Level l
-
Operate diagnostic tools and equipment.

Inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical issues.
-
Replace brake chambers and adjust slack adjusters.
-
Replace brake pads, brake lines, and hoses on medium duty vehicles and equipment.

Diagnose and repair exhaust systems, starters, alternators, water pumps, and other basic engine components on light and medium duty vehicles and equipment

Fabricate hydraulic hoses.

Perform general welding.
Mechanic – Level lll $36.34/hr. - $39.14/hr. PW-M3
In addition to Level l & II
-
Diagnose and repair heavy duty vehicles and equipment, including air brake systems and hydraulic systems

Perform structural repairs on Public Works equipment

Weld stainless steel and/or aluminum
-
Diagnose and repair Tier 1 through Tier 4 emissions components

Troubleshoot and repair advances electrical issues, including proximity switches, electrical shorts, and ignition systems.

Complete DOT inspections.

Essential job functions of this position require a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing, and lifting and carrying a range of weight up to 100 pounds.

Must be capable of physically demanding work in inclement weather for an extended period of time and in areas of noxious odors and smells, work in close proximity to loud and moving equipment and work in an environment where the noise level is usually moderately loud.
- Must be able to follow written, oral, and sequential instructions.

Able to operate in various environments which include poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces without work being inhibited by fears.

Educational, Certifications, and Experience:
Mechanic – Level l

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.

Valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class A or ability to obtain within six months of employment.

First Aid - CPR Certification required within one year of hire.

HAZWOPER Training within six months of hire.
- Confined Space Certification required within one year of hire.
Mechanic – Level ll

2 Year Technical Degree in Automotive Maintenance or Equivalent Experience.
