Job Summary:
Uyemura International Corporation (UIC), a specialty chemical manufacturer of plating chemistries, has an immediate opening for a chemist. UIC is a dynamic company that solves problems and adds value. The role is responsible for analyzing customer samples of plating chemistry and preparing accurate, timely reports in accordance with internal specifications, industry standards, and customer requirements. This role ensures reliable testing to support quality control and technical operations while maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines. Our chemists play a key role in customer support by providing clear analysis results, addressing technical inquiries, and contributing to continuous improvement of laboratory workflows. The position is located in Southington, CT.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Perform analysis on customer samples and answer customers’ questions as needed.
- Perform quality control on finished products when the quality control chemist is not available and enter results into Datacor and Minitab.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring proper functionality and accuracy.
- Prepare standard and reagent solutions, and ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and samples in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
- Support method validation, method development, and process improvement initiatives as required.
- Conduct guided testing for proprietary plating chemistries.
- Achieve established work area cleanliness standards and maintain a high degree of organization in work area(s) including; follow and support 6S program efforts and achieve and strive for highest quality standards in work.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and good laboratory practices (GLP) to maintain a safe working environment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve quality issues, support audits, and contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory workflows.
Qualifications and Skills:
Education and/or Experience: BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related science field required.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, test methods, safety data sheets (SDS), and governmental regulations. Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, SOPs, and presenting findings to colleagues and management. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with cross-functional teams including production, R&D, and quality assurance.
Math Skills: Strong understanding of basic and intermediate mathematics, including algebra, unit conversions, and statistics. Ability to calculate chemical concentrations, dilution factors, and interpret numerical data with accuracy.
Computer Skills: Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Minitab would be preferred.
Laboratory/ Instrumentation Skills: Working knowledge of wet chemistry techniques and instrumental analysis (e.g., titration, pH, spectroscopy, chromatography). Experience operating, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory instruments such as balances, pH meters, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, ICP, AA, CVS or HPLC.
Reasoning Ability: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot out-of-specification results. Capable of multi-tasking, prioritizing, and working independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Demands: Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks such as pipetting and weighing samples. Frequent walking, bending, and lifting of containers (typically up to 25 lbs). Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including lab coats, gloves, safety glasses, and respirators if necessary.
Work Environment: Primarily laboratory-based within a chemical manufacturing facility, with occasional visits to production areas.
Specialization (License, etc.): Specialized knowledge in analytical techniques relevant to the company’s products (e.g., metal analysis or inorganic chemistry) is a plus. Continuous improvement mindset and willingness to support method development or validation projects when needed. Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma is a plus.s
