Northern Maine Skin Cancer Center is seeking a compassionate, motivated, and clinically skilled Dermatology Nurse Practitioner to join our growing team. Our practice is focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of skin cancer in an underserved region of Maine. This is an excellent opportunity for a provider who enjoys meaningful patient relationships, procedural dermatology, and working in a collaborative, patient-centered outpatient setting.
The Nurse Practitioner will evaluate and manage patients with a wide range of dermatologic concerns, with a particular emphasis on skin cancer screening, biopsies, treatment planning, post-procedure care, and long-term surveillance. The ideal candidate is professional, detail-oriented, eager to learn, and committed to providing thoughtful, high-quality care.
Responsibilities
Evaluate and manage dermatology patients in an outpatient clinical setting.
Perform comprehensive skin examinations, focused dermatologic assessments, and follow-up visits.
Diagnose and treat common dermatologic conditions, with emphasis on suspicious lesions, actinic damage, skin cancers, and skin cancer surveillance.
Perform procedures within scope of training, licensure, and experience, including shave biopsies, punch biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, suture removal, wound checks, and other minor dermatologic procedures.
Educate patients on skin cancer prevention, sun protection, biopsy results, treatment options, wound care, and follow-up recommendations.
Identify lesions or clinical situations requiring physician consultation, Mohs surgery, excision, referral, or additional evaluation.
Provide post-procedure care and assess healing concerns, including bleeding, infection, wound dehiscence, and other patient questions.
Accurately and timely document patient encounters in the electronic health record.
Communicate effectively with physicians, physician assistants, medical assistants, front office staff, and referral partners.
Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, OSHA, and office policies.
Support a positive, respectful, and team-oriented clinical environment.
Participate in ongoing training, quality improvement, and development of clinical protocols as appropriate.
Requirements
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Current or eligible Nurse Practitioner licensure in the State of Maine.
Current national board certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
Dermatology experience strongly preferred; experience in primary care, urgent care, surgery, wound care, or another outpatient procedural specialty may also be considered.
Strong interest in skin cancer diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance.
Comfortable performing full-body skin exams and minor dermatologic procedures, or willing to be trained.
Ability to recognize concerning skin lesions and escalate appropriately.
Strong clinical judgment, professionalism, and attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills with patients, families, and staff.
Ability to work efficiently while maintaining a warm and compassionate bedside manner.
Experience with dermatology coding, documentation, and EHR systems preferred.
Commitment to patient privacy, safety, and high-quality care.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior dermatology experience.
Experience performing biopsies, cryotherapy, excisions, and wound checks.
Familiarity with ModMed/EMA or similar dermatology EHR.
Comfort reviewing pathology results and counseling patients on treatment recommendations.
Interest in working in an underserved area with high dermatologic need.
Experience working collaboratively with physicians and other advanced practice providers.
