The Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) plays a critical role in promoting oral health and preventing dental disease. This licensed professional works directly with patients to provide preventive dental care, including cleaning teeth, examining patients for oral diseases, and educating them on proper oral hygiene practices. The RDH collaborates closely with dentists and other team members to ensure high-quality patient care and a positive experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform dental prophylaxis, including removal of plaque, calculus, and stains from teeth.
- Conduct thorough oral assessments and charting of dental conditions for diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Take dental radiographs (X-rays).
- Apply fluoride treatments and dental sealants.
- Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, diet, and lifestyle habits that impact oral health.
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records.
- Sterilize and prepare instruments and equipment following infection control protocols.
- Assist the dentist during examinations and dental procedures as needed.
- Monitor and maintain hygiene supplies and equipment inventory.
- Adhere to state and federal regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA compliance.
Qualifications:
- Valid and active state license as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH).
- Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program.
- CPR certification (Basic Life Support).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
- Proficient with dental software and digital imaging.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with dental software, e.g., Dentrix
Skills specific to pediatric dental care:
- Discuss healthy snacks and how sugar affects teeth
- Point out areas where plaque might be hiding
- Explain what to expect during dental cleanings and evaluations
- Encourage kids with praise and fun challenges to keep brushing
- Partner with parents to create positive dental experiences
