Youth Justice Outreach Liaison

The Department of Community Engagement and Outreach provides these services for the Library and our community: services to prisons, jails, and reentry populations; Book Mobile programs; Hip Hop programs and services; coordinated outreach to and with community partners; and training and support for branch library outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Youth Justice Collective focuses on young adults interested in justice or impacted by the criminal justice system. This is for teens who want to learn more about justice, advocacy, the court system, and current events in a fun and stress-free environment. Throughout the school year, members of the Collective have thought-provoking discussions, play games, and participate in hands-on workshops. The Part-Time Youth Justice Outreach Liaison will assist with these areas. The Youth Justice Outreach Liaison provides logistical and record-keeping support to the Youth Justice Coordinator, implements programs at multiple sites throughout Queens, and conducts outreach. This position is based in our Central Library location and conducts neighborhood outreach with a focus on our eastern or western Queens Public Library locations.
The Youth Justice Outreach Liaison reports to the Youth Justice Court Coordinator and works closely with community library staff, local nonprofits, and other youth organizations. The Youth Justice Outreach Liaison will reach out to the community through schools, youth organizations, and other nonprofits. Performs other duties as required.
Outreach
- Develops and maintains working relationships with neighborhood schools, precincts, and other organizations.
- Attends neighborhood council and community meetings.
- Assists the outreach team with general outreach.
Programs
- Under the direction of the Youth Justice Court Coordinator, the Part-Time Youth Justice Outreach Liaison will provide assistance to the Youth Justice Collective program.
- Provides logistical and record-keeping support to the Youth Justice Court Coordinator.
- Implements programs at multiple sites throughout Queens.
- Provides support to Youth Librarians and the Youth Justice Court Coordinator to implement programs, maintain knowledge of current youth justice practices, and facilitate staff training.
- Assists the Teen Center managers and Young Adult librarians in other youth-related programs and services.
Position Information
- The rate of pay for this position is $25.00 per hour.
- Varied schedule, usually Monday through Friday during after school hours, and there may be occasional evenings and weekends with a maximum of 17 hours per week.
- Approximately 40% travel required. This travel includes attending meetings at our main Central library, promoting our events at external locations, attending trainings at other library locations, and conducting outreach at neighborhood groups and organizations.
- This is a non-union position.
- Part-time positions do not offer any medical or health benefits.
Education and Experience/Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalency Diploma required. Associate’s Degree preferred. At least one year of experience working or volunteering in one or more of these areas: with youth, on justice-involved projects, in advocacy, or similar. The position requires an interest in working with youth; flexibility in approaching daily responsibilities; and a drive to impact and influence services provided in our community. Must be knowledgeable in a range of technology or have a willingness to learn whatever technology is required for the job. A special expertise in arts, creativity, and/or technology is preferred. Must be able to demonstrate a high comfort level speaking in groups and/or participating in public speaking. Fluency in a second language spoken in Queens is preferred. Proficiency in Spanish preferred.
