Performance Coach
J Bodyworks | SOMA, San Francisco
About J Bodyworks:
We are an exercise therapy and performance studio located in the heart of San Francisco’s SOMA district, working with athletes, high-performers, and motivated individuals navigating injury, rebuilding capacity, or pursuing elevated performance goals.
We’re looking for Personal Trainers and Strength & Conditioning Coaches to join our collaborative, neurologically-informed performance environment. This is not a traditional personal training role. Our coaches share a common language of applied neurology as a framework for movement, motor development, resilience, and performance enhancement.
The Role:
As a Performance Coach, you will deliver highly individualized exercise therapy and performance programs and actively contribute to J Bodyworks’ education, culture, and growth. You will work alongside other advanced practitioners in an environment that values critical thinking, assessment-driven programming, and collaboration.
What You'll Do:
- Design and deliver customized exercise, mobility, and performance programs for clients with injuries, movement limitations, or high-level performance goals.
- Administer assessments and track client progress.
- Conduct private training sessions, workshops, seminars, and in-house education offerings.
- Collaborate with other coaches using applied neurology principles as a shared framework.
- Build and retain clientele by embodying J Bodyworks’ core principles and brand standards.
- Maintain accurate scheduling and client records.
Our Philosophy:
At J Bodyworks, applied neurology is not a buzzword—it informs how we assess movement and pain, progress load, and build durable, transferable performance. The philosophy emphasizes that the brain is the source of all therapies and that Sensory Pathways preempt Motor Pathways. Much of the scientific foundation is based on Z-Health's theories and practices. We expect our coaches to be coachable, curious, and willing to evolve their thinking.
Qualifications:
- Experience: At least 2 years of experience working in a one-on-one personal training or coaching setting
- Current CPR certification and eligibility to work in the United States
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, high integrity, and reliability
- Enthusiasm for learning and applied problem-solving
- Strongly Preferred: Background working in a clinical / rehab setting
- Strongly Preferred: Certification from a nationally accredited organization (NASM, NSCA, ACSM, ACE, etc.) or a Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, or a related field
- Strongly Preferred: Comfortability with SOAP notes and usage of CRM’s and other digital tools
- Bonus Points: Familiarity with or completed training with Z-Health
Compensation & Growth:
- Compensation: You’ll start at $50–90 per session, with advancement opportunities tied to education and performance milestones
- You will also be compensated at a minimum rate for all non-session hours
- This is a W-2 job. Once minimum requirements are met, benefits are provided.
- Growth: Benefit from internal education, collaborative learning, and clear progression pathways
Why J Bodyworks?
- Collaborative, high-intellect coaching environment
- Clear advancement pathway tied to skill, not tenure
- Access to continuing education and in-house development
- Direct reporting to Founder, Jae Yee
