Position Overview
The Engineering Principal will lead technical direction, project delivery, and business development for complex building systems projects. This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with strategic leadership to ensure high-quality MEP and fire protection designs, efficient use of BIM/Revit workflows, and successful client engagement across the project lifecycle. The Engineering Principal will mentor engineering teams, uphold technical standards, and drive continuous improvement in design and delivery practices.
Key Responsibilities

Provide technical direction and oversight for MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and fire protection (FP) engineering projects from concept through construction administration.

Lead multidisciplinary design teams, review engineering documents, ensure compliance with codes, standards, and client requirements, and produce high-quality deliverables.

Act as the primary technical contact for clients, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction; manage stakeholder expectations and resolve complex engineering issues.

Drive adoption and best practices for BIM and Revit workflows, including model coordination, clash detection, and integrated design review.

Mentor and develop engineering staff through coaching, performance feedback, and training initiatives to build a strong technical bench.

Participate in business development activities: prepare proposals, technical scopes, and fee estimates; present capabilities to prospective clients; and support pursuit strategy.

Manage project schedules, budgets, and risk; ensure projects meet financial and quality targets; coordinate with project management to address resource allocation and delivery milestones.

Establish and maintain technical standards, procedures, and QA/QC processes to ensure consistent, code-compliant engineering outputs.

Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and regulatory changes; lead innovation initiatives to improve design efficiency and sustainability.

Represent the firm at industry events, client meetings, and professional organizations to strengthen reputation and expand networks.
Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, or other relevant Engineering discipline; advanced degree preferred.

Professional Engineer (PE) licensure required; multiple-state licensure or ability to obtain is highly desirable.

10+ years of progressive experience in MEP and/or fire protection engineering, including design and construction administration on large, complex projects.

Demonstrated expertise in engineering design, codes and standards (IBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, NEC, local codes), and constructability reviews.

Proven experience leading technical teams and delivering projects on time and on budget, with strong client-facing and business development skills.

Proficiency in Revit and BIM platforms, including model coordination, clash detection tools, and collaboration workflows.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

Experience with project financial management, resource planning, and QA/QC processes.
