Los Alamos National Laboratory has selected SAP as its next-generation Cloud ERP, and this role sits at the center of that transformation. As Senior Data Architect within LANL's ADS-BADS organization, you will own the architectural vision for modernizing LANL's enterprise data environment - defining strategy, leading large-scale migrations, designing cloud-native platforms on Databricks and SAP infrastructure, and presenting directly to executive leadership. At $104-$107/hr fully remote, this is an opportunity to do consequential data architecture work alongside world-class scientists and engineers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Enterprise Data Architecture

Define enterprise data strategy, standards, and architectural blueprints

Lead migration of legacy data environments to cloud-native platforms

Design and implement large-scale data warehouses and data architectures
-
Partner with SAP integrators, ERP planners, and institutional SMEs
-
Ensure data integrity, security, governance, and accessibility
-
Present architectural strategies and decisions to executive stakeholders
Databricks Platform Architecture

Advise on Databricks reference architecture covering Lakeflow, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Mosaic AI, Databricks SQL, and Databricks Apps

Guide platform migrations from legacy SQL and document stores onto Databricks

Recommend security and governance-as-code: Unity Catalog ABAC, governed tags, row filters, column masks, encryption, and compliance security profiles

Advise on tiered data pool architectures aligned to LANL's data classification policy and regulatory requirements

Recommend FinOps standards, workload and cost management

Mentor data engineers, analysts, and AI/ML teams; contribute to architecture reviews and enterprise standards

Evaluate emerging Databricks capabilities and recommend adoption strategies
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

15+ years of progressive experience in data architecture and modernization

7+ years designing and operating Databricks workloads with medallion layer architecture

Hands-on experience with Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Spark Structured Streaming, Lakeflow, Databricks SQL, MLflow, and Mosaic AI Model Serving

Proven experience migrating enterprise data workloads from on-premises to Databricks

Production streaming and CDC experience

Depth in Unity Catalog ABAC governance, classification, encryption, and compliance-to-control translation

Experience with Snowflake, Databricks, or SAP data platforms (S/4HANA, Datasphere, etc.)

Strong Python, SQL, Spark; cloud platform depth (AWS, Azure, or GCP)

Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and present to executive stakeholders
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with SAP BDC/Datasphere and Databricks integration with zero-copy patterns

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) or SAP Integration Suite experience

GenAI and agent systems on Databricks

CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform) for data platforms

Experience in regulated industries (government, utilities, life sciences) and related frameworks (FedRAMP, ITAR, HIPAA, GxP, etc.)

Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field

ERP certifications (SAP, Oracle, Workday, etc.)
