The QMA/BHT is responsible for providing direct care and supervision to residents in a residential behavioral health setting. This dual-role position includes administering medications within scope of practice as a Qualified Medication Aide and supporting residents with daily living activities, therapeutic engagement, and maintaining a safe, structured environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities QMA Responsibilities
- Administer prescribed medications in accordance with physician orders, state regulations, and facility policies
- Accurately document medication administration in the MAR (Medication Administration Record)
- Monitor residents for medication effectiveness and adverse reactions; promptly report concerns to nursing/clinical staff
- Maintain proper storage, handling, and security of medications in compliance with regulatory standards
- Perform medication counts per shift and report discrepancies immediately
- Assist with medication refills and pharmacy coordination as needed
BHT Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision and support to residents in a residential setting
- Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including hygiene, grooming, and meal support
- Facilitate and/or support therapeutic groups, activities, and structured programming
- Monitor and document resident behaviors, mood, and participation in services
- Support implementation of individualized treatment plans under clinical direction
- Conduct safety checks and maintain awareness of resident whereabouts at all times
- Assist in crisis intervention and de-escalation using approved techniques
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in accordance with DMHA, Joint Commission, and organizational standards
- Maintain daily logs, incident reports, and shift notes
- Ensure adherence to all policies related to medication administration, infection control, and resident safety
- Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement activities
Qualifications, Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Current certification as a Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) in the state of Indiana required
- Previous experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or residential care preferred
Certifications Required
- Active QMA Certification (Indiana)
- CPR/BLS Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire)
- CPI or approved de-escalation training (or ability to obtain upon hire)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of medication administration procedures and safety protocols
- Ability to effectively engage with individuals in recovery or with behavioral health needs
- Strong observation, documentation, and communication skills
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in crisis situations
- Understanding of confidentiality and HIPAA regulations
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs as needed
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
Work Environment
- Residential SUD health setting
- May include exposure to individuals in crisis or with behavioral health and substance use disorders
- Requires a high level of professionalism, boundaries, and emotional resilience
