We are a busy 24-hour emergency and day practice looking for an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our Veterinary Nursing Team.
This full-time position is primarily later afternoon/evening shifts (typically 2:00 PM–12:30 AM), although one shift each week may be scheduled 12:00 PM–10:30 PM. **Shift times may be adjusted based on staffing and hospital needs.
Our caseload is a mix of scheduled appointments, hospitalized patient care, walk-in emergencies, and surgery. Our Veterinary Assistants are an integral part of our veterinary nursing team, working alongside our veterinarians and RVTs to provide exceptional patient care, client service, and efficient hospital workflow. We're looking for someone who is organized, dependable, takes initiative, and enjoys working as part of a collaborative team.
Position Details
- Full-time, 10-hour shifts
- Primarily afternoon/evening shifts (typically 2:00 PM–12:30 AM), with one shift each week that may be scheduled 12:00 PM–10:30 PM (subject to change based on hospital needs)
- Weekends and holidays required
- Fast-paced GP + ER setting
Responsibilities
- Work alongside veterinarians and RVTs to provide patient care for scheduled appointments, hospitalized patients, walk-in emergency cases, and surgery
- Obtain patient histories, TPRs, and assist with patient assessments
- Perform technical procedures including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, laboratory procedures, radiography, medication administration, nursing care, and treatments based on experience and hospital protocols
- Assist with patient triage, stabilization, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation, recovery, and emergency and soft tissue surgeries
- Monitor hospitalized patients, administer treatments, and communicate changes in patient status to the veterinarian
- Maintain accurate medical records, treatment sheets, and charges
- Provide compassionate patient care while delivering exceptional client service and communication
- Help maintain an organized, efficient treatment area and contribute to overall hospital workflow
What We're Looking For
- Minimum 2 years of veterinary assistant experience required
- Emergency, urgent care, or specialty experience preferred
- Strong technical skills including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, laboratory procedures, radiography, medication administration, anesthesia support, patient nursing care, and hospitalized patient care
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and adapt quickly to changing priorities in a fast-paced GP and ER environment
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Positive, team-oriented attitude with excellent initiative and accountability
- Reliable with excellent attendance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in emergency, specialty, or urgent care medicine
- Experience with Pulse (or similar veterinary software)
- RECOVER CPR familiarity
- Bilingual
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and restrain patients over 40 lbs (with assistance)
- Ability to stand and work on your feet for extended periods
- Comfortable working in a clinical environment that may include exposure to blood, bodily fluids, odors, emergency situations, and surgical procedures
