Housing
Dormitory housing will be available for this position at either the Kawishiwi Ranger District Office (1393 Highway 169 Ely, MN 55731) or Gunflint Ranger District Office (2020 West Highway 61 Grand Marais, MN 55604). Housing includes parking, kitchen facilities, and shared bathroom/showers, and is located close to amenities in the cities of Ely and Grand Marais. Rustic housing at a historic guard cabin may be arranged for part of the tour if interested.
Position Summary
The Heritage Technician AmeriCorps Member serves with Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps in partnership with the Superior National Forest. This position provides hands-on experience in cultural resource management, historic preservation, recreation stewardship, wilderness management, and public engagement. The member supports heritage, recreation, and wilderness programs through field surveys, monitoring, preservation projects, collections management, public outreach, and resource protection activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Project Development (30%)• Research, develop, and implement cultural resource and stewardship projects.• Conduct field reconnaissance and participate in project planning meetings.• Produce written reports and GIS-based maps.• Assist with project logistics, safety planning, and compliance activities.Field Operations (30%)• Conduct archaeological surveys and cultural resource inventories.• Perform Priority Heritage Asset assessments and monitoring.• Record archaeological sites through mapping, photography, documentation, and testing activities.• Support wilderness campsite evaluations and recreational infrastructure assessments.• Participate in preservation trades projects.Collections Management, Reporting, and Data Analysis (20%)• Analyze, catalog, and accession artifacts and cultural materials.• Maintain cultural resource records and inventory documentation.• Manage spatial data using GIS and field mapping applications.• Prepare inventory forms, technical reports, and project summaries.Outreach and Education (20%)• Support public interpretation and educational programming.• Assist with National Register of Historic Places nomination activities.• Coordinate logistics with partners, volunteers, tribal governments, and community organizations.• Participate in public outreach events and volunteer engagement activities.
Qualifications
Required:• Minimum age of 18 years.• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.• Interest in history, archaeology, preservation, conservation, recreation, or public lands management.• Strong communication and organizational skills.Preferred:• Coursework or experience in archaeology, history, anthropology, natural resources, GIS, historic preservation, recreation management, or related fields.• Experience with fieldwork, outdoor recreation, or volunteer service.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to hike 1–3 miles over uneven terrain.• Ability to work outdoors in remote locations and varying weather conditions.• Ability to stand, bend, carry equipment, and lift materials.• Ability to safely operate or travel in canoes, motorboats, and government vehicles.
Pay: $600.00 per week
