Most people don't leave a firm because they're unhappy.
They leave because they can already see how the next ten years play out.
Another busy season. Another promotion. More responsibility. Still building someone else's business.
This role offers something a little different.
A long-established CPA firm in Oak Brook is looking for a Tax Manager who wants to become more than just another manager. One of the Partners is planning for the future, and rather than waiting until retirement is on the horizon, they're looking to bring someone in now. Someone who wants to learn the business, build relationships with clients, and over time become part of the ownership of the firm.
That's a very different conversation to "partner track". This isn't a carrot being dangled in front of you. It's succession planning.
You'll work closely with the Partners from the start, taking ownership of review work, becoming a trusted adviser to clients, and gradually stepping into a bigger role as the years go on. If you've built a small book of business already, great. If not, that's not a deal breaker. They're much more interested in finding someone who's ambitious, commercially minded, and wants to build something that lasts.
It's also the sort of firm where people actually know each other. Most of the team chooses to work in the office because that's how they like to collaborate, not because someone's counting desk days. They'll want you in regularly at the beginning while you get to know the clients and the way they work, but they're sensible people. If you've got a longer commute, they'll have that conversation.
A CPA would be ideal, but they're equally happy to consider someone working towards it or with an EA. They're far more interested in finding the right person than ticking every box.
The bigger attraction is where the role could take you, because ten years from now, you could still be reviewing tax returns for someone else's firm.
Or you could be helping to run your own.
If you're just browsing the job boards and you haven't dusted off your resume yet, that's not a problem. Give me a call first on 312-564-5028. Or, if you prefer, send me a connection request or message on LinkedIn (Lucy Weibel at Distinct), and we can chat there instead.
If you're in accounting and unsure whether to apply because you don't meet every single requirement, I would still encourage you to apply. We work with CPA firms that are committed to building diverse, inclusive workplaces, and if this role is not quite right, there is a good chance I will be working on another opportunity that is.
