Key Responsibilities:
The key roles of a dental hygiene assistant (or hygiene assistant in a dental office) include helping the dental hygienist provide efficient patient care. Common responsibilities include:

Greeting and seating patients.

Reviewing and updating medical and dental histories.

Taking and recording X-rays (if certified).
-
Preparing and disinfecting treatment rooms.
-
Setting up instruments and materials before appointments.

Assisting the hygienist during procedures when needed.

Suctioning, passing instruments, and ensuring patient comfort.

Sterilizing instruments and maintaining infection control standards.
-
Taking impressions or intraoral scans (if allowed by state regulations and office policy).

Providing patients with oral hygiene instructions and post-treatment care information.

Charting findings and updating patient records.

Stocking treatment rooms and ordering supplies.

Scheduling follow-up appointments or helping with patient flow.
