Position Summary
The School Food & Nutrition Director is responsible for the overall administration, management, and compliance of the school nutrition program. This position oversees all aspects of food service operations, ensuring meals are safe, nutritious, and meet all federal, state, and local regulations, including USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) requirements.
The Director plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates the nutrition program to ensure efficient operations, fiscal responsibility, and high-quality service delivery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Administration & Compliance
- Direct and oversee all school nutrition programs.
- Ensure compliance with USDA, state, and local regulations.
- Maintain required documentation for audits and reviews.
- Ensure adherence to civil rights requirements.
Food Service Operations
- Manage daily operations of food service.
- Develop procedures for food preparation and sanitation.
- Ensure compliance with food safety standards (HACCP).
Menu Planning & Nutrition
- Plan menus that meet USDA guidelines.
- Ensure meals are appealing and appropriate.
- Monitor portion control and dietary needs.
Staff Management
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.
- Ensure required annual training is completed.
- Maintain respectful communication with staff.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage budget.
- Monitor costs and oversee procurement.
- Manage inventory and vendors.
Quality Assurance
- Maintain quality control systems.
- Conduct inspections and ensure compliance.
- Address deficiencies promptly.
Communication & Promotion
- Promote nutrition program participation.
- Communicate with stakeholders.
- Support wellness initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field OR equivalent experience. Experience in food service management.
Knowledge of USDA programs.
Training Requirements
Minimum of 12 hours of annual USDA-required training.
Working Conditions
Kitchen and office environment with physical activity required.
