American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Pediatric Psych position at a freestanding acute inpatient behavioral health facility in Bangor, ME, requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and a ME or compact RN license.

Freestanding acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away
-
Pediatric Psychiatric Unit serving patients ages 5–18, with floating required to the Adult Psychiatric Unit (ages 18+)

Pediatric diagnoses include Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria

Adult diagnoses include Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, and occasionally Substance Use Disorder/CIWA patients (medically cleared)

All patients are medically cleared prior to admission; lines, drains, and tubes are not typical

Both voluntary and involuntary admissions; no forensic patients or inmates

Seclusion rooms are available and used when necessary; chemical restraints are not used

Facility offers specialized therapies including pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens

Day shift RN ratio is 1:5–6; Night shift ratio is 1:13 with nursing resource support

Psych Tech support: Peds – 6 day / 2 night; Adults – 2 day / 2 night

Charting via Cerner; medications dispensed via Pyxis
-
12-hour day shifts, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
-
48 hours per week
-
Every other weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday)

Modified self-scheduling: travelers sign up for preferred shifts, subject to manager review and adjustment

No on-call requirements

Holiday coverage required on a rotation basis

RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; contract may need to be extended if shifts within a week cannot be covered

Active ME state RN license or compact RN license currently in hand
-
Current BLS certification required
-
MOAB certification required (obtained on-site during orientation)

Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience required
-
Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; candidates without peds experience may be considered with manager approval
-
Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints required
-
Comfortable with medication administration, group facilitation, and clinical documentation
-
Must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity

Must maintain a permanent address 100+ miles south/southwest of Bangor, ME to be eligible for the travel pay rate

Flu vaccination required for employment eligibility

2 professional references within the past year required, at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)

Full SSN, driver's license, and copies of all certifications required for consideration

Orientation consists of the first week (Monday–Friday) on day shift, followed by a second week on 12-hour shifts as scheduled
-
MOAB training is covered during orientation, with scenario-based de-escalation practice offered every other week; a MOAB Educator/Trainer is on site
-
During patient escalations, a designated code leader verbally de-escalates while assigning roles to other staff; travelers may serve as code leader and are expected to complete a debriefing form afterward

Unit support includes a Nurse Manager (days), Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), House Administrator (overnight/weekends), Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, NP (on site until 4:00 PM, on call overnight), Psychiatrist (daily rounds and on call 12:00–6:00 AM), and an Occupational Therapist (8:00 AM–4:30 PM, 7 days/week)

Security is on site but does not respond to patient escalations; staff from all units, including Techs and Nurses, respond to escalations

Dress code: any solid-color scrubs; must be professional
