Children's Ministry Program Support Assistant
Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and experienced individual to join our Children's Ministry team on Sunday mornings. This multifaceted role includes supporting Sunday School classrooms from 9:00–10:00 a.m., assisting with our play-based sensory ministry for infants through age three from 10:00–10:45 a.m., and providing individualized one-on-one support from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. to a child with autism to foster meaningful participation in Sunday School. The ideal candidate has experience working with children, including those with diverse learning and developmental needs, and is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and Christ-centered environment where every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to grow in their faith.
Position Details
- Schedule: Sundays, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Compensation: $25.00 per hour, based on experience
- Reports To: Director of Children & Youth Ministry
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist with Sunday School classrooms and children's ministry programming.
- Assist in Caterpillar Corner, a play based sensory time for infants to three years of age alongside the teacher.
- Provide one-on-one support for children requiring individualized assistance, including children with developmental, behavioral, or communication needs.
- Foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where every child feels valued and supported.
- Support children's participation through appropriate communication strategies, visual supports, sensory accommodations, and positive behavior techniques as needed.
- Work collaboratively with Sunday School teachers, volunteers, parents, and ministry staff.
- Monitor children's well-being and communicate any concerns or successes with the Director of Children & Youth Ministry and parents when appropriate.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children and their families at all times.
Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- Previous experience working with children in educational, ministry, childcare, or therapeutic settings.
- Experience supporting children with special needs, including autism or other developmental disabilities.
- Previous Sunday School, children's ministry, or Christian education experience is preferred.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, flexibility, and the ability to remain calm and supportive in a variety of situations.
- A commitment to providing compassionate, individualized care while working collaboratively with ministry staff and volunteers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or coursework in Education, Special Education, Psychology, Child Development or a related field.
- Experience working within a church or faith-based children's ministry.
Requirements
- Successful completion of all required background checks and child protection clearances before employment.
- Reliable transportation and consistent Sunday morning availability.
