Position: Electrical Design Engineer (Data Center Focus)
Location: 100% on-site (Houston, TX 77058)
Type: 12-Month 1099 Contract (with W2 Conversion)
Future Benefits: Upon conversion to a W2 employee, you will become eligible for MEP Green Design & Build's comprehensive benefits package (i.e. medical/dental/vision insurance; PTO ; 3% 401k match; winter break)
NOTE: During the initial 12-month 1099 phase, the contractor is responsible for their own tax withholdings and is not eligible for company-sponsored employee benefits.
About the Opportunity
MEP Green Design & Build is seeking a dedicated Electrical Engineer to join our Clear Lake team. In this 100% on-site role, you will play a critical part in designing, analyzing, and commissioning high-performance electrical systems with a strong emphasis on mission-critical and data center facilities, alongside our commercial and industrial projects. This position bridges the gap between electrical design, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and hands-on commissioning, providing a unique pathway to grow your expertise in sustainable, high-availability building practices.
Core Responsibilities
To ensure our projects meet the highest standards of energy efficiency, redundancy, and performance, you will:
- Mission-Critical Design & Engineering: Develop comprehensive electrical design documentation, including medium/low voltage power distribution layouts, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems, backup generators, switchgear, lighting, and fire alarm systems. Ensure strict adherence to the National Electrical Code (NEC), IEEE, and local regulations.
- System Optimization & Capacity Planning: Analyze power systems utilizing historical data, load profiling, and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) to optimize capacity, manage power flow, and support overall Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) reduction.
- Commissioning & Reliability Support: Assist the Lead Electrical Engineer in developing and executing rigorous testing procedures during the construction acceptance phase. Focus on mission-critical redundancy (N+1, 2N failover testing, load bank testing) and Integrated Systems Testing (IST) to ensure zero-downtime integration.
- Multidisciplinary Coordination: Shadow and collaborate with mechanical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and controls teams to ensure fully integrated, clash-free project delivery, recognizing the complex interplay between high-density cooling requirements and critical electrical loads.
- Project Administration: Review and manage critical project documentation, including scopes of work, technical specifications, submittals, RFIs, one-line diagrams, O&Ms, and systems manuals.
- Client Engagement: Develop presentations and spreadsheets to translate complex capacity analyses, coordination studies, and commissioning findings during client meetings.
Qualifications & Expertise
We are looking for an analytical problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced, highly technical, team-based environment:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of related MEP electrical design experience, with a required focus on data centers or other mission-critical facilities.
- Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of Uptime Institute Tier standards, mission-critical power architectures (UPS and generator topologies), and familiarity with power system analysis software (such as SKM or ETAP) for short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies.
- Technical Skills: High-level proficiency in Revit MEP, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Sustainability Focus: Familiarity with triple bottom line cost-effectiveness analysis; working toward commissioning or green building credentials (e.g., LEED, CxA) is a strong plus.
- Work Requirements: Must be able to work 100% on-site in the 77058 zip code, with flexibility for travel (5-10%) for field assessments.
- Communication: Outstanding interpersonal skills to effectively communicate highly technical concepts to data center operators, lead engineers, and internal teams.
Ready to build the future of sustainable, mission-critical infrastructure? Apply today.
