OEC is looking for a Director of Safety Training & Loss Prevention to Direct and manage the work of the Safety Training & Loss Prevention department by developing, maintaining, and leading safety training and loss prevention strategies for Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives, including safety training, Central Ohio Lineworker Training (COLT) Program, regulatory compliance, and other role-specific initiatives. The position also serves to guide strategies to improve in-house safety for employees of Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and implements safety related training that includes acceptable industry safe working procedures for distribution system maintenance and construction, first aid, CPR, hazard communication requirements, line-clearance tree trimming, defensive driving, safety awareness, OSHA standards and other safety related training.
- Oversees the development and implementation of regulatory compliance training and implementation initiatives for Ohio’s electric cooperatives that keep employees safe, prevent hazards, reduce premiums, and provide each cooperative the tools to comply with applicable federal regulations related to the electric utility industry.
- Oversees the development and implementation of the line worker training program through the Central Ohio Lineworker Training (COLT) Program, that includes effective pre-hire and post-hire assessments, crew leader assessments, apprentice lineman training, journeyman lineman training and relevant industry workshops.
- Coordinates and implements the Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP) for participating member systems, promoting compliance with industry best practices with regards to safety, regulatory, and employee education.
- Serves as the Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP) Area Administrator, working with other states and NRECA to develop an effective national safety program. Represents the Company with other community or industry safety groups and programs, as needed.
- Coordinates and implements the Statewide Emergency Work Plan (EWP), ensuring member systems and out-of-state cooperatives have the resources to restore power safely and efficiently to their members following a large outage event. Keeps EWP written document current and relevant.
- Coordinates and guides strategies to improve in-house safety for Statewide, Buckeye Power, and related companies.
- Develops detailed annual work plans and budget for Safety Training & Loss Prevention program initiatives. Executes these work plans with appropriate internal or external groups and committees.
- Maintains current working knowledge of changing federal, state, local safety laws and regulations. Makes recommendations, communicates appropriate updates to appropriate contacts with the cooperative member systems and OREC Statewide departments.
- Modifies departmental initiatives and materials to ensure that all work products are consistent with current laws and regulations.
- Prepares analysis of accident reports and recommends program changes directed toward continuous improvement.
- Coordinates and implements international electrification efforts.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Technical courses preferred in basic electricity, mathematics, English, and public speaking.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license
- Loss Control Professional Certification required at time of hire or soon thereafter.
- Commercial driver’s license is beneficial.
- Certified instructor in Medic First Aid CPR, AED, and First Aid for Adults or equivalent preferred
Experience:
- Three (3) years of experience as an instructor in Safety Training and Loss Prevention for the electric industry required.
- Five (5) years of supervisory experience required.
- Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience as a journeyman or first-class lineman with varied responsibilities in construction, operation and maintenance preferred.
- Work experience with an electric cooperative highly desired.
- Relevant on-the-job experience or education above and beyond that described above may be substituted for part of the experience and/or education requirement.

- Skilled in adult education techniques.
- Skilled in working on matters requiring high degree of confidentiality.
Physical Requirements
Frequent: Sedentary work, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods, close visual acuity, work with a computer, keyboard, communicate with others.
Periodic: Lift objects of nominal weight.
Work Environment
Travel approximately 50% of workdays, both in and out-of-state, including overnight stay. Work outside normal schedule is required.
