Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Starter Accountant to join our finance team. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals aspiring to develop their accounting skills within a supportive environment. The successful candidate will assist with financial record-keeping, ensure regulatory compliance, and support various accounting functions essential to our organization’s financial health.
Duties
- Assist in preparing and analyzing financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulatory standards.
- Support the reconciliation of general ledger accounts, bank statements, and accounts receivable records to ensure accuracy.
- Enter journal entries accurately into accounting software such as QuickBooks or PeopleSoft, including debits & credits and VLOOKUP functions for data analysis.
- Help maintain compliance with SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) controls and other regulatory requirements relevant to nonprofit and governmental accounting.
- Contribute to month-end closing processes by assisting with balance sheet reconciliation and financial report writing.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis activities to aid financial planning efforts.
- Collaborate with senior accountants on special projects involving financial report interpretation and financial management.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; relevant coursework or internships in accounting are preferred.
- Basic understanding of accounting principles such as double entry bookkeeping, accrual accounting, and financial concepts.
- Familiarity with financial software including QuickBooks, Quicken, or similar platforms; experience with PeopleSoft is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel data analysis tools like VLOOKUP, spreadsheets, and pivot tables.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills for managing multiple tasks accurately.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new software systems and regulatory requirements.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating within a team environment and supporting mentoring opportunities for junior staff.
