Position Summary
The Cook is responsible for preparing nutritious, appetizing meals that meet the dietary needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This position plays an essential role in promoting the health, well-being, and quality of life of those we serve by ensuring meals are prepared safely, served on time, and in accordance with physician orders, dietary guidelines, and food safety regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, cook, and serve meals according to approved menus, recipes, and portion sizes.
- Follow all therapeutic diets, texture modifications, and physician-ordered dietary restrictions.
- Ensure meals are prepared and served in accordance with sanitation, infection control, and food safety standards.
- Maintain accurate food temperatures, storage practices, and documentation as required.
- Assist with menu planning and meal preparation for special events and holiday meals.
- Monitor food inventory and notify the Dietary Manager of supply needs.
- Receive and properly store food deliveries following First In, First Out (FIFO) procedures.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and report equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, food preparation areas, dining areas, and storage rooms.
- Work collaboratively with Dietary Aides and other departments to ensure efficient meal service.
- Follow OSHA, HIPAA, state, federal, and agency regulations.
- Participate in mandatory training, staff meetings, and continuing education programs.
- Work flexible schedules, including weekends and holidays as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience as a Cook in a healthcare, long-term care, institutional, or commercial kitchen preferred.
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and infection control practices.
- Ability to prepare meals according to therapeutic diets and dietary modifications.
- Ability to read recipes, menus, and production sheets accurately.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with residents, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Must be able to pass Level 2 background screening and drug screening requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in healthcare, long-term care, or institutional food service.
- Food Handler's Certification or ServSafe Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, reaching, and carrying throughout the shift.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Frequent exposure to heat, steam, kitchen equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment.
- May work beyond normal scheduled hours when necessary.
- Must maintain professionalism and flexibility in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
