Marine Mechanic / Marine Service Technician
McLaughlin’s RV & Marine is seeking a dependable, mechanically skilled Marine Mechanic to diagnose, service, and repair boats, marine engines, trailers, and related systems.
The majority of our engine work is performed on Yamaha outboards. We also service Ford- and GM-based V8 marine engines used in fiberglass boats. 12-volt electrical diagnosis and repair is a significant part of this position.
Previous marine experience is helpful but not required. Candidates with professional small-engine, automotive, powersports, agricultural, or similar mechanical experience are encouraged to apply.
Primary Responsibilities
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair Yamaha outboard engines.
- Perform scheduled maintenance, including:
- Engine-oil and filter changes
- Gear-lube changes
- Spark-plug replacement
- Fuel-system service
- Water-pump and impeller service
- Winterization and spring start-up
- Diagnose and repair Ford- and GM-based V8 engines used in marine applications.
- Troubleshoot engine-performance, starting, charging, fuel, ignition, cooling, and control-system problems.
- Diagnose and repair 12-volt electrical systems, including:
- Batteries and battery switches
- Charging and starting systems
- Wiring harnesses, terminals, connectors, and grounds
- Switches, relays, fuses, and circuit breakers
- Gauges and instrumentation
- Navigation and interior lighting
- Bilge, ballast, and other accessory pumps
- Stereos and installed boat accessories
- Use multimeters, diagnostic software, service manuals, wiring diagrams, and other testing equipment to identify problems accurately.
- Inspect and repair steering, throttle, shift, fuel, and cooling systems.
- Diagnose and repair boat-trailer components, including bearings, brakes, wiring, lights, tires, and couplers.
- Prepare boats for customer delivery and verify that engines, electrical systems, accessories, and safety equipment operate correctly.
- Perform water testing when necessary to confirm repairs and proper operation.
- Accurately document diagnostic findings, required parts, labor performed, and completed repairs on work orders.
- Notify the service department of additional repair needs before performing unauthorized work.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Protect customers’ boats and property while they are in the dealership’s care.
- Follow manufacturer service procedures, dealership policies, and applicable safety requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous professional experience in:
- Small-engine repair
- Automotive repair
- Marine service
- Powersports repair
- Agricultural or equipment repair
- A related mechanical field
- Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic ability.
- Experience troubleshooting 12-volt wiring and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with engines, fuel systems, ignition systems, cooling systems, and charging systems.
- Ability to read and follow wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and manufacturer service procedures.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, multimeters, and diagnostic equipment safely.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to completing repairs correctly.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a service team.
- Dependable attendance and the ability to manage assigned work efficiently.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Yamaha, marine, or other manufacturer certifications are helpful but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier items with assistance.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work in confined areas.
- Ability to safely enter, exit, and work inside boats.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in changing weather conditions.
- Ability to safely operate vehicles, boats, trailers, and service equipment after receiving appropriate training and authorization.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is mechanically capable, dependable, and comfortable diagnosing both engine and electrical problems. Because 12-volt wiring is a substantial part of the work, the successful candidate should be willing to trace circuits, test components, locate wiring faults, and make durable, professional repairs.
Marine experience is valuable, but an experienced automotive or small-engine technician with strong electrical and diagnostic skills can transition successfully into this position with appropriate marine-specific training.
