Heavy Equipment Operator / Working Foreman

Compensation: $40–$50+ per hour (based on experience)
90-Day Probationary Period
CMG Contracting LLC is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator / Working Foreman to lead field crews while operating heavy equipment on excavation, demolition, underground utility, drainage, grading, and site development projects throughout New Jersey.
This is a leadership position for someone who can run equipment, supervise crews, solve problems in the field, and deliver projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule. We're looking for someone who takes ownership of their work and wants to grow with the company long term.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, rollers, and other heavy equipment.
- Lead and supervise field crews while working alongside them.
- Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, grades, and elevations.
- Lay out work and ensure projects are built according to plan.
- Coordinate daily activities with the Construction Manager and office staff.
- Train and mentor equipment operators and laborers.
- Identify problems early and develop practical field solutions.
- Adapt to changing field conditions while maintaining productivity and quality.
- Perform excavation, demolition, underground utility installation, grading, drainage, and complete sitework.
- Coordinate trucking, materials, and equipment needs.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance needs.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and productive job site.
- Communicate professionally with inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, customers, and the office.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in civil/site construction.
- Strong experience with excavation, demolition, underground utilities, grading, drainage, and complete site development.
- Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, specifications, elevations, and grades.
- Strong understanding of site layout, excavation tolerances, and grade control.
- Ability to adapt to changing site conditions and make sound decisions in the field.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to think independently.
- Proven leadership experience managing crews and keeping projects productive.
- Ability to teach, mentor, and develop operators and laborers.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and consistently meet project deadlines.
- Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and accountability.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred.
- Valid driver's license required (CDL is a plus).
