Job Overview
Coastal Truck Driving School is seeking an experienced Class A driver to join our team as a full-time CDL Instructor.
This position is hired through our Hammond campus but is primarily a traveling, off-site instructional position supporting our partnership with Northshore Technical Community College. Current partner locations include Slidell, Bogalusa, and Greensburg. When not assigned to an off-site class, the instructor will work at the Hammond campus.
This role requires more than driving experience. Our instructors represent Coastal in the classroom, on the training range, on the road, and while working with our partner organizations. We are looking for someone with strong professional bearing who can be trusted to work independently, exercise good judgment, maintain composure, and represent the company well without constant supervision.
Training on Coastal's curriculum, procedures, and instructional expectations will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Provide classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel CDL instruction.
- Teach pre-trip inspections, backing maneuvers, safe vehicle operation, road skills, and applicable regulations.
- Prepare students for CDL testing and professional driving careers.
- Manage assigned classes independently while maintaining Coastal's instructional and safety standards.
- Maintain accurate attendance, training, progress, and required student records.
- Identify students who need additional assistance and provide appropriate coaching.
- Communicate student progress, attendance concerns, safety issues, equipment problems, and other operational needs to management.
- Maintain a professional and productive relationship with Northshore Technical Community College personnel.
- Exercise sound judgment and remain professional and composed when handling unexpected situations or student concerns.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class A CDL.
- Current DOT Medical Card.
- Minimum three years of over-the-road (OTR) Class A commercial driving experience.
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel regularly to assigned locations.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Dependable, punctual, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently.
- Professional demeanor and ability to remain composed in challenging situations.
- Previous CDL instructor experience preferred but not required.
Travel and Compensation
The instructor should expect regular travel from the Hammond area to active partner-campus assignments in Slidell, Bogalusa, and Greensburg.
Off-site instructional work is paid at an additional $3.00 per hour, for a total of $22.00 per hour while assigned off-site.
Authorized travel is reimbursed at $0.50 per mile.
Overnight travel is not normally required. In the event an overnight stay is necessary due to extenuating circumstances, a $50 daily per diem is provided in accordance with company policy.
Military-experienced candidates and experienced commercial drivers interested in transitioning into instruction are encouraged to apply.
