Under close supervision, receives on-the-job training in the monitoring, support, and operation of enterprise information technology systems, including on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure; performs work as both trainee and productive team member to gain practical experience in IT operations, systems monitoring, cybersecurity awareness, and technical support functions; does other related duties as required.

As a trainee and productive worker:
- Studies principles and techniques of modern IT operations, including server environments (physical and virtual), cloud services, enterprise applications, and municipal technology systems.
- Observes and participates in monitoring enterprise systems using centralized monitoring tools, dashboards, and alerting systems to ensure availability, performance, and security.
- Assists in monitoring and supporting:
- Virtual servers and storage environments
- Cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft 365, Azure or similar SaaS/IaaS systems)
- Network infrastructure (switches, firewalls, wireless systems)
- Endpoint devices (desktops, laptops, mobile devices)
- Learns to review system logs, security alerts, and automated notifications to identify potential system malfunctions, service interruptions, or cybersecurity risks.
- Assists in executing documented procedures for system startups, shutdowns, backups, patching cycles, and maintenance activities.
- Helps maintain backup systems and verifies successful completion of data backups and disaster recovery processes.
- Learns to identify causes of system or application malfunctions and confers with supervisors or senior technical staff regarding corrective actions.
- Assists in responding to service tickets and user support requests through a centralized help desk or ticketing system.
- Documents incidents, resolutions, and system performance metrics in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Maintains operating records such as:
- System performance reports
- Incident and ticket logs
- Asset inventories
- Hardware and software license records
- Backup and recovery logs
- Learns basic cybersecurity best practices, including access control, password security, multi-factor authentication, and incident reporting procedures.
- Assists in communicating technical issues and operational status updates to supervisors, vendors, and technical staff.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic information systems used by the agency, including enterprise resource planning (ERP), financial systems, public safety systems, document management systems, and other municipal software platforms.
