Emmet County EMS Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) provide high-quality, patient-centered emergency medical care and transportation in the pre-hospital environment. EMTs play a critical frontline role in delivering compassionate care, supporting paramedics and other responders, and ensuring operational readiness for emergency and non-emergency responses.
This position requires professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to continuous learning while working as part of a collaborative EMS team.
The essential functions listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position.
- Perform patient assessment, basic life support care, and treatment in accordance with Michigan EMT licensure, local medical control authority protocols, and Emmet County EMS policies.
- Provide patient-centered care with professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.
- Assist paramedics and other healthcare providers as part of an integrated response team.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, hospital personnel, and fellow responders to support continuity of care.
- Respond promptly and safely to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Operate emergency vehicles and equipment in compliance with state law, EVOC standards, and agency policy.
- Conduct routine inspections, restocking, and maintenance of ambulances, equipment, and facilities to ensure operational readiness.
- Maintain vehicles, stations, and equipment in a clean, organized, and professional condition.
- Accurately complete patient care reports and related documentation in a timely manner, in accordance with legal, regulatory, and agency requirements.
- Adhere to all Emmet County EMS policies, standard operating procedures, medical protocols, and safety guidelines.
- Maintain required licensure, certifications, and continuing education.
- Participate in training, drills, quality improvement activities, and performance evaluations.
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and accountability in completing assigned duties.
- Represent Emmet County EMS in a professional manner and support a positive public image of the organization.

- Knowledge of pre-hospital emergency medical care, protocols, and equipment appropriate to the EMT level of licensure.

- Proficiency with electronic patient care reporting systems, communication equipment, and EMS technology.
- Physical stamina and strength sufficient to safely perform essential job duties, including lifting, carrying, and patient movement.
- Currently licensed EMS provider, EMT level or above, with the State of Michigan or ability to become licensed with the State of Michigan prior to position start date.
- Possess a valid Michigan Vehicle Operators License with no restrictions, or have the ability to obtain one prior to the start date.
- Possess an Emergency Vehicle Operator (or equivalent driver training) Certification.
- Possess a current Basic Life Support certification (minimum). ITLS/PHTLS (or equivalent) certification preferred, or ability to obtain during employment orientation period.
- Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred but not required.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination, including drug screening.
