JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Traffic Manager, the Yard Inspector plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of vehicles, materials, and personnel throughout the yard. This position supports daily yard operations by directing traffic, inspecting materials, enforcing safety standards, and assisting with scale operations as needed. The Inspector must demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, outdoor industrial environment while meeting daily operational goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Yard Operations & Traffic Control
- Direct truck and equipment traffic to ensure safe, efficient unloading and movement throughout the yard.
- Oversee loading and unloading activities to ensure adherence to safety protocols.
- Maintain organized traffic flow and prevent cross-contamination of materials.
- Monitor and maintain clean walkways, driveways, and scale areas.
Material Inspection & Quality Control
- Inspect inbound and outbound materials to ensure compliance with company standards.
- Identify and isolate prohibited or hazardous materials, including but not limited to fuels, oils, refrigerants, batteries, and other restricted items.
- Inspect materials and pull out non-ferrous commodities such as copper, brass, wire, radiators, electric motors, and other non-ferrous metals.
- Assist with material quality review and grading as needed.
- Prevent contaminated or non-conforming loads from entering the yard.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce PPE requirements and all yard safety protocols.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, transportation requirements, and company policies.
- Complete inspection reports accurately and in a timely manner.
- Escalate safety or compliance concerns appropriately.
Scale & Administrative Support
- Operate the scale in the absence of the Scale Operator.
- Support scale operations by verifying weights and ensuring proper documentation.
- Communicate discrepancies clearly and professionally.
Customer & Team Interaction
- Interact courteously and professionally with drivers, customers, suppliers, and team members.
- Provide clear direction and maintain smooth yard operations through effective communication.
- Address issues calmly and escalate concerns to leadership when appropriate.
Administrative & Other Duties
- Attend all required training sessions and meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support yard operations.
SCHEDULE & WORK CONDITIONS
- Regular schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Hours may vary between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, based on operational needs.
- Must be willing to work extended hours and varying shifts as needed.
- Position is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, dust, and mud.
- Work is performed in a physically demanding, industrial environment that may be dusty, dirty, and noisy.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
- Strong commitment to safety.
- Strong attendance and reliability are required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing demands.
- Ability to identify materials and recognize prohibited or hazardous items (training provided).
- Strong communication skills and ability to interact professionally with customers, drivers, and staff.
- Self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision.
- Previous experience in an industrial or recycling environment preferred but not required.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
PHYSICAL & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, twist, reach, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work in moderate to loud environments and outdoor conditions year-round.
- Must wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, gloves, hearing protection, and safety-toed boots.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
