The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the Literacy Council of White County and is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and strategic direction of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures the effective operation of the Council through sound financial management, program oversight, fundraising, staff leadership, community engagement, and implementation of the Board's strategic vision.
Essential Responsibilities:
Organizational Leadership
●Provide visionary leadership consistent with the mission and strategic goals established by the Board of Directors.
●Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization.
●Develop and maintain an effective organizational structure with clearly defined roles, responsibilities, reporting relationships, and communication.
●Recommend policies and strategic initiatives for Board consideration.
●Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, grant requirements, and organizational policies. Board Relations
●Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff.
●Keep the Board informed regarding organizational performance, finances, programs, opportunities, and challenges.
●Prepare reports and recommendations to assist the Board in strategic planning and decision-making.
●Support the Board in carrying out its governance responsibilities.
Financial Management
●Prepare and administer the annual operating budget.
●Monitor revenues, expenditures, and cash flow.
●Ensure accurate financial reporting and appropriate internal controls.
●Oversee audits and ensure sound fiscal stewardship of organizational resources. Fund Development
●Lead fundraising efforts, including donor cultivation and stewardship.
●Research, write, and administer grants.
●Develop partnerships with foundations, businesses, civic organizations, government agencies, and individual donors.
●Identify opportunities to strengthen the organization's long-term financial sustainability.
Program Leadership
●Provide oversight of all educational and community programs.
●Ensure programs remain effective, mission-focused, and responsive to community needs. ●Evaluate program outcomes and implement continuous improvement.
●Encourage the development of innovative programs and services.
Staff Leadership
●Provide leadership, guidance, and collaborative support to the Assistant Director in planning, implementing, and evaluating organizational programs, strategic initiatives, and daily operations. ●Recruit, hire, orient, develop, and evaluate staff.
●Establish clear goals, priorities, and performance expectations.
●Foster open communication, teamwork, and a positive organizational culture.
●Encourage professional development, innovation, and continuous improvement.
●Ensure staff have the resources and support necessary to perform their responsibilities effectively.
●Address personnel matters promptly, fairly, and in accordance with organizational policies.
Volunteer Leadership
●Support the recruitment, training, recognition, and retention of volunteers and tutors.
●Promote meaningful volunteer engagement throughout the organization.
Community Relations
●Serve as the primary public representative of the Literacy Council.
●Build and maintain collaborative relationships with schools, employers, libraries, correctional facilities, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community partners.
●Promote public awareness of the organization's mission, programs, and impact.
●Represent the organization through public speaking, media engagement, and community events.
Organizational Growth
●Identify opportunities for organizational expansion and innovation.
●Develop partnerships that strengthen services and community impact.
●Promote continuous improvement through evaluation, planning, and strategic development.
Qualifications
●Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
●Experience in nonprofit leadership, education, workforce development, public administration, or a related field.
●Demonstrated success in grant writing, fundraising, and donor development.
●Experience managing budgets, personnel, and organizational operations.
●Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
●Ability to work collaboratively with a volunteer Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
●Commitment to the mission of adult education, literacy, and lifelong learning.
