Position: Licensed Elementary Life Skills Teacher
Location: Elwood Community School Corporation
Contract: Certified Teaching Contract
Start Date: 2026–2027 School Year
Elwood Community School Corporation is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and student-centered Licensed Elementary Life Skills Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will provide specially designed instruction and support for elementary students with significant learning, communication, behavioral, adaptive, and/or functional needs.
The Life Skills Teacher will develop and implement individualized educational programs that promote academic growth, functional life skills, communication, independence, social-emotional development, and positive behavior. This position requires a strong commitment to meeting students where they are, building meaningful relationships, collaborating with families and staff, and helping each student reach their fullest potential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide specially designed instruction aligned to students’ Individualized Education Programs.

Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals, accommodations, modifications, and services.

Teach functional academics, daily living skills, communication skills, social skills, and adaptive behavior skills.

Collect and analyze student progress data to guide instruction and IEP development.

Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and families.

Supervise and provide direction to instructional assistants/paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.

Support students with behavioral, sensory, medical, and personal care needs as appropriate.

Participate in case conferences, evaluations, manifestation determinations, and other required meetings.

Maintain accurate records and complete required special education documentation in a timely manner.

Create a safe, structured, positive, and inclusive classroom environment.

Support opportunities for students to participate meaningfully in the school community.
Qualifications:

Valid Indiana teaching license in Mild Intervention, Intense Intervention, or appropriate Special Education licensure area.

Experience working with students with significant disabilities preferred.

Strong understanding of IEP development, progress monitoring, behavior supports, and differentiated instruction.

Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, families, and outside providers.

Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Commitment to maintaining high expectations while providing individualized support for students.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
-
Experience with functional life skills curriculum and adaptive instruction.

Experience supporting students with communication needs, autism, intellectual disabilities, behavioral needs, or multiple disabilities.

Knowledge of assistive technology, visual supports, sensory strategies, and positive behavior interventions.

Ability to lead and support paraprofessionals in a team-based classroom environment.
