Position Summary
The Workover Rig Derrick Hand is a member of a 4–5-person workover rig crew responsible for performing well service operations on oil and gas wells. Reporting to the assigned Tool Pusher/Workover Foreman or Rig Operator, the Derrick Hand plays a critical role in supporting workover operations by safely performing duties on the derrick, tubing board, rod basket, and other elevated work areas.
This position requires working at heights and assisting with the handling of tubing, rods, and other equipment used during well servicing operations. The Derrick Hand is also responsible for performing routine inspections and maintenance on the derrick structure and related components while ensuring all work is completed in accordance with company procedures, customer requirements, and safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform assigned duties on the derrick, tubing board, rod basket, and other elevated work areas during workover operations.
- Assist in the safe handling, stacking, and organization of tubing, rods, casing, and other tubulars.
- Work closely with the Rig Operator and Floor Hands to ensure efficient and safe well servicing operations.
- Perform routine inspections of the derrick structure, tubing board, rod basket, and associated rig components.
- Assist with preventative maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of derrick equipment and rig components.
- Participate in rig-up and rig-down activities and assist with equipment preparation and mobilization.
- Monitor equipment and work areas for potential safety hazards and report concerns immediately.
- Maintain proper communication with crew members during all workover operations.
- Assist with housekeeping duties to ensure a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all operational procedures, customer requirements, and company policies.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Tool Pusher, Workover Foreman, Rig Operator, or other designated management personnel.
Safety Responsibilities
- Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and customer-specific safety requirements.
- Utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) and fall protection equipment when working at heights.
- Participate in pre-job meetings, safety meetings, and job hazard assessments.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and near-miss incidents.
- Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions or practices are observed.
- Promote and contribute to a culture of safety, teamwork, and operational excellence.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in workover rig operations, drilling operations, or related oilfield services preferred.
- Ability to safely work at heights and perform duties on elevated work platforms.
- Knowledge of tubing, rods, casing, and well servicing equipment preferred.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to safety and operational excellence.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb ladders and work at significant heights for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials as required.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the work shift.
- Ability to safely perform duties in varying weather and environmental conditions.
- Ability to wear and utilize fall protection and other required safety equipment.
Work Environment
This position is primarily performed in an outdoor oilfield environment and may require extended work hours based on operational needs. Work is routinely performed at heights and around heavy equipment, moving machinery, and varying weather conditions.
