Position Summary
The Engineering Intern provides administrative and observational support to the Engineering Division while gaining exposure to municipal engineering operations and construction projects. This internship is designed for a high school student interested in engineering, construction, drafting, public works, or related fields. The intern will learn about engineering principles and municipal infrastructure through hands-on administrative tasks, project organization, plan review, and job shadowing opportunities.
Essential Functions

Scan, organize, and electronically file engineering documents, plans, permits, and project records

Assist with maintaining project files and records in accordance with department procedures

Review documents for completeness and accuracy

Read and proof engineering plans, drawings, and construction specifications for formatting, spelling, consistency, and basic errors

Assist staff with organizing project documentation and correspondence

Observe engineering staff during project meetings, field visits, and construction inspections

Accompany engineering staff to construction sites and infrastructure projects for educational observation purposes

Assist with data entry and other administrative support tasks as assigned

Maintain confidentiality of sensitive project and personnel information

Qualifications
Education: Currently enrolled in high school; interest in engineering, construction, architecture, drafting, surveying, public works, or a related field. Preferred coursework in mathematics, science, engineering, drafting, computer-aided design, or related subjects.
Skills: Ability to follow directions and complete assigned tasks; basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications; strong attention to detail; ability to communicate professionally with staff and the public.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in both an office environment and outdoor field settings. The intern may occasionally visit active construction sites while accompanied by engineering staff and will be required to follow all applicable safety rules and procedures.
Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use a computer for extended periods of time; ability to occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 lbs; ability to travel to and observe field locations and construction sites; Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions when participating in site visits.
